EVO vs McLaren

Hello All -

I was a proud owner of a McLaren 570S for a couple of years. Recently, I sold it and am now considering either a Huracan EVO or another McLaren (600LT or 720S). This is not a daily driver for me; rather, a fun weekend car. I love sports cars...the sound, feeling, speed, etc. However, I also appreciate great electronics and sound system. I know there are many people who don't listen to music and only listen to the engine...I'm not one of them!

The reason for the post is that I would like to get some input from current Huracan owners, who have also owned a McLaren, to give me their honest feedback on which one they appreciated more. I know that I can't go wrong with any of these vehicles, but it's good to hear what other people have experienced. To be honest, I have never had a real "love" for Lambo's, but the EVO has changed my perception! It has great lines, amazing naturally aspirated sound, good electronics, all wheel steering, and a well built interior. To me, the EVO is overpriced though and will probably have a drastic drop in value. Yes, all cars depreciate, but I'm not looking to be foolish, either. Will it drop more than a McLaren...probably not, the way they are pumping out models left and right! The main thing I didn't like about my 570S were the electronics...extremely dated to say the least, which is why I started looking at Lamborghini to begin with.

Any thoughts or input is appreciated!

I've had both brands had 570s, currently have a 720s and a Huracan and never a problem with either of the brands. Mclaren does feel a bit more track car for sure, the 720 is a monster hard to compare to huracan in my opinion, but the Lambo is prestige luxury sports car that drives like a champ can't never go wrong.

Test drive, take notes and make your decision. Do you want no headaches? Both brands should always be under warranty.

^ The Nurburgring time is really the "golden benchmark" for roadcars worldwide.

It is the toughest, bumpiest "real world" track with the longest straights and most twisties, using the best drivers, with the best setup, in the best conditions.

It is the king of tests. The summit.

It is why Porsche and others have used it for decades as their benchmark track.

Hey guys, I'm new here so idk what the etiquette is around reviving old threads but I'm dealing with this exact question now and there's already a lot of valuable posts here.

I'm deciding between EVO Spyder and 720s Spider. Both will cost me about the same.

Based on the reviews, I've come to understand that 720 = faster, more comfortable, questionably reliable and EVO = louder, more reliable etc.

That's fine. The part I'm stuck on (maybe childishly so) is which garners more attention.

720: Looks like a spaceship, doors go up, badge less prestigious (among non car-people).
EVO: Sound, badge, though Huracans may be a bit too common now? (Los Angeles)

I'm sure I'll enjoy canyon carving with either of them and some posters will feel that "this is the wrong question to ask", but I'm young and it's a genuine question that's on my mind right now.

.
It's WAY less prestigious to car people as well because we have seen what is behind the curtain....stupid level of depreciation, poor reliability, small and helpless dealer network, and a corporation that survives on ignoring the needs of owners in hopes of them falling for the next illusion.....

The Lambo doors are very nice, and both cars look incredible. Now here’s childish, which sounds cooler, “I own a Lamborghini” or “I own a McLaren”?

Nice anecdote about DFW. I agree the EVO sounds much better than the 720.

Indeed. Even though I don't recall saying "I own a Porsche" in a straightforward way that often, there's definitely a secondary emotional response from the inquirer after you answer "what kind of car is that" apart from whatever emotion they get from witnessing it in person.

Key difference is 720s spider has a carbon fiber monocoque providing unmatched structural rigidity while minimizing cowl shake. It is a performance beast and looks like a spaceship. It sounds mediocre and depreciates like a rock.

Instead of asking a bunch of strangers why dont you testdrive both and make your decision from that?

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm asking strangers because these strangers have more experience with these cars than I do (including ownership experiences). One test drive can only provide me so much information.

With that said, I do intend to test drive both, but I also intend to make my purchase that same day so I want to make sure I have my pros + cons sorted out ahead of time.

I say I receive more attention in my performante than I do in my 600LT. I totally agree with Shark01 about McLaren but damn, my stock 600LT is way way more fun to drive than my supercharged HP. Steering is super precise and acceleration is pretty much effortless. Also, if you are tall, the huracan spyder can be pretty uncomfortable since leg room will be even more limited and may decrease the fun factor. But if getting attention is the main objective, Lamborghini wins. Besides, you would also be getting better value, better service, better reliability, and sound with Lamborghini haha.

To sum things up, you can't go wrong with either an Evo or 720 haha. I am getting my 720 delivered this week or next (depending on how long shipping takes with coronavirus stuff). About two months ago, I drove a brand new Evo for a couple hours that was from Lambo Scottsdale. I can 100% say that in stock form, the Evo defiantly sounds much better than a 720. The car defiantly felt more "raw" than a 720. And its stupid fast, fastest stock Lambo that I had ever driven. Now in saying that, I still decided to get a 720 for a couple reasons. As fast as the Evo was, the 720 is the fastest stock car you can buy (minus hypercars) plain and simple. It makes the Evo which is ridiculously fast, feel lightyears behind in speed. And that's hard to do because the Evo is the fastest Lambo I've ever driven. The 720 rides like a Rolls Royce with its crazy suspension, the carbon tub is so light, rigid, and extremely safe. It steers better and the active aero is legit, I've never had a car with that much aero trickery. In saying that, there is not a single thing wrong with the Evo. Its a good problem to have between choosing an Evo or a 720 haha. The 720 was my choice though, might not be everyones.

Besides what everyone else has mentioned here, I believe there are some other points worth considering that should sway you one direction or the other:

1. AWD vs RWD. Personally, this is a super important factor in my enjoyment of a car. Which better suits your driving style? One is not necessarily better than the other, it comes down to preference.

2. How long do you plan to keep the car? This is related to the above mentioned issues about reliability and residual value. If you only plan to keep the car for a short period of time and intend to lease, then reliability is less of a concern and residual value is not a concern. If you intend to keep the car forever, or for a long period of time, then I'd factor in reliability, availability of service departments based on where you live, and perhaps residual value.

3. Appearance. Which looks better to you is more important than which looks better to others.

I think you nailed it! That is exactly what I would have asked myself if it was me trying to choose.

The Evo sound in sport mode is simply intoxicating. There’s a super-satisfying fluttering noise at about 3000 rpm, and then of course the crackles and pops... I love every minute in that thing. As the engine breaks in I think it’s actually getting better and better.

The McLaren does little for me. I don’t like the curvy styling that much, and the build quality seems lower than a Lambo. Also where I live I prefer AWD due to rain much of the year (obviously less of a factor in LA than in Seattle).

Ultimately the Lambo will probably turn more heads — especially if you get a splashy color — except for those brief moments when a door is open.
