I’ve never owned a McLaren so i’m no authority on this subject. I do however own an Evo, and much as I like the 600LT a lot I would never consider swapping the Evo for one. Just my two cents.

I have the sensonum sound system and, whilst it’s not the best i’ve heard in a car, i’m glad i have it over the standard system. I listen to music all the time, and you need the extra power to hear it over the engine in Sport/Corsa modes.

From everything i’ve heard, all modern Lambos are far more reliable than McLarens when it comes to electronics.

When it comes to weekend fun versus a daily driver, the Evo makes it a moot point. You can do either and have as much fun as you like.

Aside from what Eamon said Mclaren’s customer support has an extremely poor reputation.

 

720s is the fastest stock car you can drive under $1m hands down. It’s mind-blowingly quick. It has ufo-style looks (which in person, look great in my opinion). It’s a great daily driver GT car that you can also track. It’s similar to the 488 GTB in that way. Both are ridiculously easy to daily drive (the 488 even more so, getting in and out of one is easier than my Porsche) but you can switch them to track/race modes and have a blast on back roads or the track.

The 600LT is a big upgrade from the 570s. It almost feels like a different car. Especially the 600LT Spyder (being able to hear the top mounted exhausts behind your head with even just the rear window diffuser down or the whole top down is awesome. The car handles like a dream, but at low speeds it very jerky. It’s not interested in fooling around town. It wants to be on canyon roads or the track. But since this is a “fun car” and not a daily, this is fine. The 720s is still faster though.

I’ve yet to drive an EVO, but from what it seems it’s more in line with the GT+track hybrid that the 720s/488 GTB have. I think it’s hands down the best looking H car they’ve made. That rear is near perfection!

The Performante might be the fun weekend Lambo you are looking for thought? However it drives very different than the 570s. Being AWD it will feel far less dancy than the RWD you are used to. This could be a plus, minus or neutral to you. Test driving an HP is a little harder than an EVO (since the dealers near might not have a used one).

I’d also recommend checking out a 488 (they are a steal of a deal right now) and they are wonderful awesome cars despite the turbo noise.

You could also check out a GT3RS or GT2RS if you want to pay the mark up (which has been going down rather quick already)

As you said, you can’t go wrong. Go with what your heart tells you. But if you do go EVO please don’t buy one of the $330k dealer demo specials that are popping up right now. They’re well overspecced.

 

I'd be a little cautious on the Macca.

The 720S is nearly half-a-minute slower round the Nurburgring than an Aventador SVJ, and 16secs slower than a Huracan Performante. The Perf is faster to 60mph than the 720S. Not to mention the rain, when a 720S turns into an iceskate. And the eye-watering depreciation. And the huge reliability problems. And the notoriously bad aftersales dealer service.

Given the choice of all the cars mentioned in this thread, the Huracan Perf stands out the most. Best looks, howl, reliability, etc.

 

I seriously considered getting a 720S. Except for the fact the nearest dealer to me is 420 miles away and I live 100 miles out of Vegas. Perhaps one day there will be a dealership in Vegas. No way I would get one and deal with getting this car to the dealer and picking it up God knows how many times for issues and warranty work. Only way I would consider getting one would be a killer deal and live within very close proximity to a dealer. So if you have one and live in LA for example you are probably okay. Cross country or extended road trips? Big gamble in my opinion. I'd assume most who have/had one in this thread do live fairly close to a dealer.

 

Thanks everyone for your input and opinions. I spent some good time at the dealership today driving the EVO Coupe, EVO Spyder and 600LT. I have to say the EVO drove great...both the coupe and Spyder! The 600LT had great performance, but honestly it was a little more raw than I like and it reminded me too much of my 570. I’m most likely going down the EVO trail as it sounds great, feels great, and looks great!

 

720 is the best bang for buck preowned vehicle right now. Nothing touches it in that price.

600 is a complete different animal than 570s. If ur looking straight line speed, the evo won’t surpass the 570 from my experience.

I owned both a Huracán and 720. Hands down huracán for reliability and fun drive. McLaren had all kinds of issues with electronics and every week something had to be fixed. It was a gremlin filled Experience.... but the doors are the best part of the 720 along with incredible acceleration.... that said it was one headache after another.

Evo has the looks, reliability, sound, electronics, and dealer service to match all of my expectations. Good luck

I highly suggest test driving a 488 GTB or Spider. It may suprise you! It's a great weekend car. It's basically a step up from a 570S, but with far better reliability (and a better warranty). It's closer to the 600LT, but way more refined. However, the EVO is awesome too! But being AWD it handles very different from what you're used to in the 570S. I loooove the EVOs looks.

 

I've been daily driving my Evo the last month and a half while a wait for my M5 to get here. I've had 0 issues with it. This is one of the most livable super cars on the market.

 

My current favorite car to drive is the 600LT. It's completely raw. You get super precise handling and the power on this car feels just right. I have never driven an Evo but I do have a supercharged performante spyder. While the HP is fun and a total beast, the 600LT just feels more fun for me. That being said, I have had small but annoying issues with the 600. Mostly so far with the car not wanting to start because it doesn't detect the keys or it just doesn't want to start for some reason. Another thing I've noticed is that fueling up is a little weird. For some old reason, the pump has trouble detecting proper insertion and filling. So it constantly clicks off. Not sure if you are suppose to just use the fuel filling funnel that comes with the car at every fill up but that would be such a hassle to do. Once the 750LT comes out, I'm most likely going to trade the 600 for that model. If you are looking for updated electronics, etc., the super series will be the one to get. For the HP, it's just been solid and reliable even with it supercharged straight from the dealership before delivery.

 

Reliability on Mclarens has been nightmarish. Simple perusal on their forum will give you an indication of how prevalent the defects. The 600LT is definitely more exciting than the 570S, which is a highly capable, comfortable and refined car, which for me is its achilles heel. It is simply not as thrill inducing as a super car should be. The main problem with the 600LT (besides reliability) is the intrusive turbo lag. Driving this car on the street proves frustrating since the acceleration only opens up in the higher rev range. Great on the track since the lag, while still evident, is less troublesome.

 

Yes they are junk. While they are fast they break all the time and the parts take months to come in. Probably why the resale is also the absolute worst.

 

As important as reliability is in a super car, dealer and manufacturer support is vital as well. McLaren fails on both fronts. Lengthy delays in providing parts and completing the requisite repairs, charging customers for repairs that should be covered under warranty and due to the paucity of dealers, many cars need to be trucked to a dealer at customer's expense.Contrast that with my experience at Grand Touring- Uptown Toronto Lamborghini. Not only has it been the most pleasurable buying experience I have ever had but the Hurucan 580 and 2 Performantes have been flawless. Best fit and finish of any car I have ever owned.

 

Calling McLaren cars junk is a tad extreme. They are great cars when they are operating properly.Quality control is a significant problem.

 

I currently own a Hurcan and a McLaren 650S. My gated transmission Gallardo SE is more fun than the Hurcan and 650s (okay I will stick to the topic here sorry),

I believe the McLaren 650s is closer to a Murcielago but more fun than the 570. Looks are killer and gets a lot of attention. Service experience is lousy from McLaren corporate. Reliability of parts is sketchy.

The Hurcan is fun all around and the sound in my opinion, is better with the Performance exhaust factory option ($4500 option) than the McLaren in Sport or Track mode. I enjoy the McLaren RWD but Hurcan AWD feels better grip on city roads without compromising the performance and initial acceleration

Service is stellar and ownership experience highly fulfilling with the Hurcan compared to the hassles of McLaren ownership due to service issues.

I could drive the Hurcan from Los Angeles to San Francisco without issues enjoying every mile of it, but driving the 650s for 50 miles in the city, would make me want to get out and stretch my back.

Depreciation is crazy and shocking on all McLarens and I will lose approx $20-$25k selling my 650s keeping it less than a year.

 

It must be just me but I think the McLaren is ugly, I love the look of the Huracan over it..

 

No, it's not just you. But I am real picky about how cars look.

 

I personally agree the Hurcan is better looking than the McLaren, but there is something about the “SPACE SHIP” look of the McLaren, which makes people stop and ask you, what car it is. I am surprised with how many people approach and ask this question, when I am in the McLaren, versus any other comparable exotic car I drive.

 

I actually like the way the McLarens look... love the lights, both front and back. I especially like the way the exhaust tips are mounted on top of the 600LT. They have a strong style/design language that runs through all their products, much like Lamborghini do, though not as iconic as the bulls. On personal preference i’d always choose the Lambo, but i wouldn’t knock the McLaren designs.

 

McLarens look tits on the street, photos don't do it justice. The doors are pure sex and the paint looks good in sunlight like Lamborghini. Not a fan of the Deadpool-style headlights and the exhaust is meh. Depreciation is brutal with new models being released all the time immediately dating 2 or 3 year-old models. Quality control and lack of dealerships and dealership support seem to be it's Achilles' heel.

 

Not a fan of the 570. The thing looks like a fake matchbox car in person. Just seems to skinny and plastiky looking

 

Of course, the difference between the "big 3" supercar makers today is paper-thin.

Whichever brand or model you choose, ~99% of the planet will never afford or drive one. Be grateful for that.

If you cannot decide which model to pick, in a lookalike supercar market, then you should always scorecard it, to help the decision. Give it a number, out of ten. Here's mine.

720 still sets the standard for speed, would also give it a 10.

I believe Reliability has improved compared to 650S and MP4-12C. Better reliability than 570S. Would give it more than a 5.

Resale still brutal, can get $100K off a low mileage, one year-old 720.

Anyhow, these are just opinions. How many of us own both a Huracan and 720? Not me.

 

To the OP, asking people on a Lambo forum about choosing between a Lambo or a Mclaren, I think you know what the answer is going to be haha. I currently daily drive my Mclaren 570s. Had it for about a year now and put about close to 8,000 miles on it. Its been bulletproof. Only had a check engine light come on for low oil but that was an easy fix. I think Mclaren got a bad rep in reliability with the original MP4-12c. That was their first real production supercar and yes some had problems but others were fine. I know multiple people who daily drive their 720 and 570 and they are nothing but bulletproof and reliable. Just like with every other company, some cars will have problems and the occasional lemon. But people forget Mclaren had only truly been making production road cars for about 10 years now. They had initial bugs with their first car and every model has been getting better. For the people that are saying the 720s and 570s and 600s are unreliable probably don't own one and don't know what they are talking about. Do people forget how fragile pretty much every car Lambo has made up until the huracan? haha. I had a Gallardo for one year and that thing was in the shop probably 6 month out of that year I owned it no lie. I am not trying to sound like an anti Lambo guy because I'm not. Im actually in the process of adding a huracan in the garage along side my 570s. Im just not a fan of people constantly dogging on Mclarens reliability when in fact all the new models they make are reliable. Some cars will have problems, just like every manufacture. But not every single car they pump out is going to have problems. In all honesty, pretty much every new exotic from any manufacture that's for sale right now is going to be super reliable. Wether its Lambo, Mclaren, Ferrari, Maserati, etc, you shouldn't be worried about reliability from any manufacture because they all make good cars. What its going to come down to is what you want from the car. Ive driven or owned just about every modern exotic there is for sale on the market in the past 10 years minus a couple hypercars. And I can tell you that its all about what you want. 600 is going to feel like a faster, lighter, and track focused 570 because thats what it is lol. The Evo is an awesome car. V10 screams, tons of grip from the 4 wheel drive/steering, has classic Lambo looks, interior is beautiful, and reliable. Really nothing bad to say about the car. A 720 though is going to be the best car you can buy hands down though. It rides like a Rolls Royce with its hydraulic suspension, looks like a UFO, has amazing visibility out the windows (which Lambo is not the best at lol), and will absolutely destroy anything minus a few hypercars. If you want speed comparison tests between modern supercars, check out dragtimes youtube channel (I believe he's on this forum but can't remember his username). He has an old and new Ford GT, Huracan, Tesla, and a 720. His 720 just absolutely waxes pretty much every car he races and its 100% stock. So moral of the story is, all modern supercars are reliable, all modern supercars are fast. 720 will be the fastest and overall best car you can buy for the money.
