LP640.

Can someone please tell me how to remove the serpentine belt? I need to replace the alternator. I’ve been fighting to figure out how the heck you access the belt tensioner to free up the belt?

Thanks in advance

Hi caninoerth - thanks for your quick response. I tried that but still can’t figure it out. Maybe this is a two person job because I’m trying to hold the tensioner while sliding off the belt. I’ll keep trying today.
If anyone else has tips/tricks to remove belt, please share. Thank you

On my 2003, the tensioner was a simple bolt attached to the alternator.

You remove/ loosen the locknut, and loosen the long bolt on the bottom of the alternator bracket. and then wind the bolt, i'm guessing anticlockwise and the alternator moves towards the middle of the car, you may need to persuade it with a rubber mallet but it moves.

I think i posted instructions on the "other forum" i will have a look to see if i can find it

Hi Del Mar. I really appreciate the feedback. I actually have both a 2003 and a 2007. The pre LP’s are straight forward as you said.
The 2007 LP640s are new design with tensioner pulley. It’s not a pain. I’m following the LP repair manual but im not able to get the belt off. I know I’m missing something but I cant figure it out. Im Hoping someone in the forum knows the trick

I put a wrench on the Tensioner, pulled the wrench back to take tension off the belt, I then used a ZIPLOCK to lock in the wrench into position. Now with my hands free, I removed the bolts holding the alternator and pried the alternator out of position. Finally remove the belt from top of the engine and bottom drive pulley. When you go to install the new belt, its in reverse order - you will need to make sure all of the belt ribs are on the bottom pulley, than slowly and carefully manipulate the tensioner back and forth until you get around to the alternator pulley. lock alternator into position, verify the belt is perfectly aligned onto the pulley ribs.

Thanks Carloz. i finally got the belt off. i like the zip tie idea. i did similar by using ratchet strap to keep tension on the wrench. i didnt realize that i needed to remove the secondary pipes to get the alternator out. Its one thing after another. im regretting having to put this all back together. im waiting for the new belt to arrive next week. cant wait to get this done.

I put a long wrench from the bottom of the car going up towards the tensioner bolt to give me the most clearance on top of the engine. Once you are ready to put the alternator back on you may have to squeeze back the alternator round metal shims with a vice grip to get clearance, otherwise the alternator may have a hard time sitting back in its space.
Make sure to dry off any coolant before putting on the new belt. Now is a good time to replace the Belt Tensioner and water pump seals. On the roadster I removed the carbon fiber brace and the brace chassis bar that sits on top of the alternator, kept the pre-cats in place.

I needed to replace my AC Compressor as the other one was snapping fuses. I believe I touched on the belt in this video. Let me know if this helps! I also replaced my Alternator.

I believe my buddy reached the belt tensioner from below while I was inside the top portion releasing the belt... not entirely sure but I think it was a 2 person job.

Tech tip: There are more grooves on some of the pulleys than others so ensure you have the new belt in the correct groove during reinstallation so you won't have any wear issues or squeaking.
