Hi everyone, i´m new to this forum and i´m considering buying a Gallardo (i know that´s quite often here ;-).

I read a lot of threads in this forum about all different kinds of Gallardo but there´s one question in particular that i have. What is the better Gallardo to buy, the old 5.0 (including all models like superleggera etc.) or the newer LP ones?

I heard a lot of good thinks about both but i also read that the old ones have a bit more "character" and the newer ones are just like Audis. On the other hand the LP models are supposed to be much more reliable and sound way better to me. So, is there any model year that i should stay away from (maybe the early ones??) and how big is the difference between these two Gallardo stages?

Furthermore, my favorites at the moment are the LP550-2 and the Superleggera, so if you have a oppinion about rear wheel drive feel free to tell me! ;-)

Thanks a lot

Funny you said that! I am having a heck of time letting go of my 08 for my new LP-550. I love that car and wouldn't change a thing. I guess I made this move because I got the deal of a lifetime and I will now have a car that is under warranty.

Maybe it´s helpful if i explain how i want to use the car: I want to drive it on weekends on some country roads and use it on the track from time to time and drive home afterwards. I guess thats pretty much what the Superleggera is made for...but on the other hand i love rear wheel drive and therefore i could imagine an LP550-2 as well.

I know there is a difference in price between the models but it´s most important to me to find the right model for my needs.

There's also an emotional side. I like the "Character" of the older cars. The engine notes are also quite different.

I have owned both, a 04 Gallardo (which was later TT'd) and now a 560.

I will be concise....

-The difference in quality is there, but minimal.
-The exterior styling difference is more noticeable and more modern on the 560
-Straight line performance is much better on the 560.
-Handling feels more direct and steering is a little more responsive on the 560
-Ride quality seems better on the 04 because its suspension wasn't as stiff. The 560 is very rigid!
-Stock for stock the 560 sounds much better in stock form. Put aftermarket exhausts on both and the pre LPs sound much better.

If you have the extra funds burning your wallet, get the 560. If not, stick with a pre-LP.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks SCVETT00, that´s exactly the kind of answer i was looking for! I think i will go for a LP model since i like the agressiv styling more and i love the sound.

What is your oppinion on the LP550-2 with it´s rear wheel drive? It´s my favorite at the moment but i´m tempted by the superleggera too because it seems more track ready.

Thanks again for your helpful reply!

Yes, the styling is nicer on the 560 IMO and it does sound better in stock form, but with an aftermarket exhaust on both, the pre-LPs sound better. Just keep that in mind if you are putting a large emphasis on exhaust notes.

As far as the 550, I have never driven it or done any research about it so I can't comment. But what I can tell you is that the 570 SL would be the ultimate car..:)

Well there is another noticeable difference and that is the eGear. The LP's egear is smoother and faster. I got comfortable with my 08 egear but it does have its drawbacks.

Since exhaust note seems to be a big factor for you, search or user Ronczpf (?? cant rememeber exactly but, hopefully, he'll chime in). He has a couple of clips of his '08 SL on track with a catless exhaust setup and it sound straight off an F1 grid.

I went from a 2005 e-Gear to a 2008 SL; although the power train is essentially the same the power delivery, shifting, throttle response it MUCH more aggressive, I actually just took it for a ride after about two months and the thing feels super responsive, this is after
replacing the air filters and installing Larini cat bypass and straight exhaust, absolutely love it.

IMO the Tubi on the LP is a bit tame for the car. It doesn't quite have the crispness that people want to hear from these cars. There is a difference. Erase. The preLP and the LP. I have a 550 and the read wheel drive with all that power is rivoting and steering is crisp. Coming from an all wheel drive before, I don't think I could ever go back to all wheel drive again. My track car is rear wheel drive as well. You will learn more on the track with a rear wheel drive car than an all wheel drive car. Now if I was running in a competition I would the opt for the all wheel drive.

I think the happy medium would be to settle for an 08 SL. With an aftermarket exhaust, you will get that sound you are looking for, plus you get added performance from a track tuned car. I wouldn't worry so much about the SL being an AWD car, you can always take out the front differential and convert it into RWD. Plus you'd have extra money left over for mods etc.

The pre LP cars have a much higher pitch exhaust note -more F1 like-than the more baritone pitch of the LP's. Gvan says it is because the earlier cars fire evenly and the newer ones fire on an odd firing pattern and so at higher RPM's the earlier car's harmonics are more aligned and thus purer and higher. Exhaust notes are very important to me also (I have a LOC exhaust installed) and that is one of the main reasons I want to keep my '07 instead of trading up.

I have LOC on my 08 and now trading up to LP550. I really will miss my LOC exhaust. It is incredible sounding. I'm bent on getting the best system I can on my new LP. it is coming with a modified LNB system so we will see how it goes from there.

Thanks guys for all your help. To be honest i like the sound of the LP cars more than the old Gallardo. I think it has a real nice "color" to it. As far as Tubi goes, i´ve only heard a Audi R8 V10 with tubi and it sounded amazing. Just a bit louder and more raw than stock.

I also think the LP models are just a little bit better looking because they look more agressive and modern. As far as AWD goes i think there is just one way to know whats right for me: try it out. I will testdrive a LP550 and compare it to an SL and i think thats my answer then.

A new LP570 would be cool but a bit too expensive so i would look for a used one with low mileage. I know the Gallardo replacement is coming next year or so but i´m not sure if it will be as "analog" as the Gallardo. As i said, i want a manual one and i could imagine that this will not be an option on the Gallardo successor.

Used car best value ... bicolore LP550-2 ... They are being sold for fire sale prices. You might be able to pick one up for under 150k is you are lucky enough.

Newer LPs are hands down better in every single way possible. The only reason you would not get one is if you flat out cannot afford it. If you can afford it, get 09+ LP, or 2011+ LP550-2.

Hi All,
seeking fellow poster opinions as I am tossing up between keeping 2006 SE e-gear Gallardo in very good condition with 20,000 miles or buying a 2011 LP560-4 e-gear with 5,000 miles. I am not a track kinda guy.
Ultimate plan is to TT whichever Gallardo I keep.
Any comments/opinions appreciated.

Aside from the bumpers, the major difference between the LP and the previous G is the perfomance, and if the end game is to TT, save your upgrade money, keep the 06 and just buy the TT kit.

I know the new eGear is better, but not 40 grand better.
