Iv'e seen the a delco alternator in a late model CT. Beena few years, and the owner recently sold the car, so I can't ask.
Suggest pullingit out, and take it to a dedicated Alternator/ Starter rework shop. Let them take a look and see what will bolt up in its place.
You my have to rework the wiring pigtails, but that should not be a big deal. Be sure to go thru all the grounds and confirm that they are making good connections as well.

Countach alternator problems AGAIN
1988 Countach. Tired of trying to get my Bosch AL170 to power the car. Does anyone know a 150-200 amp (preferably new/contemporary efficiency and cooling) direct replacement? I am puling my hair out. I put in new xeon headlights and a decent sterio w/amp and I am getting discharge at idle. I've heat wrapped the pipes, put a better heatshield on the alternator, REDTOP battery, new battery + and - cables, redid the connections behind the seat and by the motor, installed a cold air duct off the pass side and a duct cioming off the fans, and nothing seems to work. In the day with no lights on, I am BARELY ok. At night, forget it. I've changed the AL170 alternator with a new one, put on a new belt, made a smaller pulley, and still crap. I've spent way too much time and money on this issue and never want to worry about this at any cost and want something super. HELP ME GUYS

|blkdiablo32||drove the car last night for about 30 mins,headlights and fog lamps on.got home and checked voltage was charging 13.6,so far so good.|

|blkdiablo32||just wanted to give you all an update,when the alternator was removed found the alternator idler pully was almost seized,replaced the idler bearing,with the rebuilt alternator and new optima red top battery.started the vehicle engine cold at 2000 rpm charging 14.6 with lights on.whe it warmed up both radiator fans on,lights on ,engine idle at 1200 rpm charging 14 volts,ive never seen it at 14 volts,very pleased with the results.|

|blkdiablo32||well today im having a charging problem on my 94 vt.my alternator took a dump called bosch and stated 170 is 115 amp alternator,well get it and hopefully its the same one and have it installed i was told the 170 x is a new unit and 170 is rebuilt.will let you know how it goes.also my old alternator was fried inside.|

darn good price, who did you buy from? Also did you go with the 170 X or were you able to buy a 170 for that price?

Thanks for all the contributioins. Raymond, when I said I was "confused" I did not mean how an alt works, but over the crazy part numbers. Thanks for the lecture on Alt 101 .
Final answer is yes the AL170 or AL170X work on any Diablo. Yes, they also work on 928GT. 14V 115amp.
John - Go ahead with parts cross reference. Price was about $350...something like 275 + 75 core. I kept the old one (I keep all my old parts). All is good.

You know they installed from MY1987 on cooling ducts to the alternator, I did something similar on my car, just using the air blown by the radiator fans.
The improvement was clearly recognizable on the voltmeter, even after 6 hours of driving the alternator charged the battery, before after the engine got hot it must have been to warm around the alternator / AC compressor when stuck in traffic jam.
I will take a picture of my simple installation this evening, you know in most of the cases the simple tricks are the best
My solution is even better than the factory setup

You are smart to have stayed with the Bosch, the Delco sucks and has had many problems
Beautiful looking Engine, I wish we could have more Downdrafts instead of the FI's!!
