Oil Cooler Bypass Valve & Overheating
I just started tracking my 2012 STS after selling my 2013 ST last year. On my first time out at Las Vegas Speedway outside road course the cars oil overheated (170C according to the gauge) on the second lap I never had this issue with the ST which has the same oil system but also has three radiators in front. Subsequent sessions resulted in the same issue. After noodling on it and getting lots of opinions I think it is one of two things. First could just be the temp sensor however it shows normal temp under normal operation and got hotter the hard I pushed it so that lead to my next idea. My second idea was that the oil cooler bypass valve built into the oil cooler on the left side of the car was sticking and bypassing the cooler at all times.
So being the brilliant mechanic that I think I am I removed the inner fender and the C clip holding the bypass valve in place. The valve was stuck in place leading me to believe that I was onto something. I then pulled the pipe under it and proceeded to put pressure on it from below at which point it popped free slipped out of my hand and hit the ground. Of course this bent the valve and now it will no longer move freely in its sleeve.
Has anyone experienced this overheating issue? Am I on the right track? Can I buy just the valve I can't find it anywhere.
