Default Engine Temperature Issue

Hoping somebody might be able to help out! I've had an issue with my coolant temperature sensor last year that needed replacing. Fast forward 6 weeks ago the gauge stopped working. I plugged LaRA diagnostics software into the car and it read the temperature value of -100c, initial thoughts were it was a defective sensor and it needed replacing again.

Created a couple of cable harnesses to test the sensor and pinned out the resistance, brought another sensor as the oil temperature (is the same part number as the coolant one) both sensors had very close values when at similar temperatures, so I'm confident it's not the sensor.

I then plugged my generic ODB reader into the car and started the car up, the temperature gradually rose from 18c to 87c as expected on the app on my phone and the fans kicked in, meanwhile the dash gauge remained at 50c, but if you physically look at the needle of the gauge you can see it move slightly back and forth over the white mark.

My thoughts are I have a broken temp gauge, so do anybody know which other type of Audi cars have the same dash? Also the does anyone know whether the dash clocks are coded to the immobiliser? I have a sneaky feeling they are!!!

Or secondly could it be an open circuit somewhere?

Cheers

Jay

the cluster is either Bosch RB4 or RB8 they are used in various Audi's but the dials and software are different

I do not have first hand experience but as far as I know, It is encrypted and they are indeed individually programmed to the immobilizer/vehicle,
so If the cluster is in fact faulty you might have to get a new unprogrammed cluster from Lamborghini and have them program it to the car?...

I've spoken to a company today who are collecting the cluster tomorrow and should have an answer within 2-3 days. They don't know how much the unit differs from the Audi ones, but fingers crossed!

Hopefully won't be too expensive.

Latest Update: I've spoken to the company today and they have advised that the cluster is working completely perfect! Doh!

So the next port of call is either one of the ECUs, unless anyone knows of a simply test could be performed? Or maybe a common issue with the wiring harness somewhere between the ECU and the cluster?

It is hard to think it would be the harness mate.

I was down at the dealership picking up an evap pipe earlier and speaking with one of the service chaps he mentioned that you could change over the ecu’s. Are both ecu’s interchangeable with one and another?
