Undoing the LP640 rear light modification to a Pre-LP car

I couldn’t find enough photographic detail of the modification process that many people did to fit the later rear lights to the earlier cars, but gambled on it being reversible. Turns our there’s a fair bit of bodywork hacking to get the new lights to fit which means its not quite straightforward to get the old lights back.

Would anyone happen to have a picture of the rear light area on a Pre-LP car?

The right side is a problem. I’d love to see what it originally looked like. I think it was a full circle that had a rubber grommet that took a plastic protrusion from the light as the third anchor point. The newer lights have three anchor points that bolt on.

Here are the two lights side by side

Top picture is the LP640 light, bottom is the Pre-LP light.

There is a spare connector on the new “old” light. I can’t find anywhere for it to go, I suspect it for side indicators (which my car does not have). If anyone can confirm that I’d appreciate it!

Main connector is the same, and I appear to have full light functionality with that connector disconnected. So it is just that right side mounting point that I need to get sorted…somehow..

Litreally both @Stimpy and I told you it involved what you came out to find was true, you could have went ahead and said I did it anyway can I get a picture of a rear tail light that wasn't retrofitted and maybe you would have found an answer.

I even linked photos showing how involved it was.

That was a very common mod that involved sawing on the body parts back before the Murci became collectible.
We bought a Pre-LP Gallardo that had the facelifted tail lights, it's easy on those you just need a few parts from the Pre-LP and it will fit without chopping anything basiaclly plug and play. but the Murcielago it is as @Stimpy said. those mode required cutting into the rear fender, rewiring too. I know of a 40th anniversary that had that mode before thier value skyrocketted and went back to Pre-LP and they do fit without showing anything. you can't really tell unless you open the tail lights.

Not sure if we're good linking other forum but you can check this to see how extensive it is. LP640 tail light conversion on Murcie, photos

Thanks @GatedLP I appreciated both responses, and you for posting up the photos in particular. I should have been more explicit in the first sentence in my original post, my apologies .. the pics were great for the ”after” .. but didn’t show what the bodywork looked like before the mod. I was just hoping to see a “before” pic.. but no matter, finished the job today, it is possible.

Happy to help anyone else who is considering reverting back to the original rear lights on a Pre-LP car.

Now to ditch the tubi cat-less exhaust and revert it back to original.
