The Ultimate DIY/Parts Reference Thread.

INTRODUCTION:

Hey everyone,

I've been here for a while and, from all the jokes we make about me, a couple
of things are no secret: I like working on my cars, I like making how-to videos,
and I like not getting shafted by the Lambo tax.

With that said, since the Volkswagen Auto Group is lazy and run by, it seems,
accountants, we as Lamborghini owners are in a phenomenal position to be
able to cross-reference parts with Passats or whatever.

At the same time, since the parts are all used across different models and
brands (VW and Audi, with the most extreme example being the 5.2L R8), it is
relatively simple to do lots of maintenance and gear-turning work ourselves as
long as we aren't deluding ourselves that the Lamborghini is some sort of
insane, finicky, non-Audi automobile.

WHAT I'M DOING:

So, I'm going to try to make a solid thread here that I consider the "ultimate"
DIY thread. It's become a bit of a pet project of mine to keep my mind off my
mother's cancer, which many of you are aware of and have sent me kind words
about.

Over the past few weeks, I have been digging around, cross-referencing part
numbers, and doing some research. I've spoken to head techs, service writers,
and even the Lambo North America and the factory in Italy. Since a lot of the
higher-ups at the various marques know me, I've been able to leverage that
into candid information and discussion.

HOW THIS WILL WORK:

I'm going to try to make this thread as easy to navigate as possible. I will make
a slew of "placeholder" posts under this. I will separate info into easy to
navigate "sections": Lubrication, Ignition System, Fuel System, Tires/Wheels,
Brakes, etc.

In each section, I will note OEM and Aftermarket parts (for example, OEM air
filters as well as K&N/BMC filters) along with the best price I have found for
them including shipping and return policy and "risk" of purchase. (IE, if Joe
Shmoe's Random Auto Part site has air filters for $51 out the door, and Amazon
has them for $52, I will list Amazon because there is almost no risk of a
problem versus an unknown auto part supplier).

I will also note what cars the parts work on, and, as I make videos, I will post a
link to the how-to video as well.

Let's do this!

Reval of rear engine cover

All,

I am not sure why I lost this thread and sorry you have not hear from me. I actually removed the rear engine cover which includes the adjustable spoiler. It was quite easy two bolts at the front which can bee seen from looking into the engine bay and four small bolts at the rear. I am kicking myself as I did not take any photographs, but maybe taking it off again as I have a small water leak at the rear, I am sure it is only a loos e hose as I decided to change all to silicon. I have a special exhaust made which is de-catted so the exhaust cover does not fit so I decided to make an engine cover from aluminium covered in carbon fibre. As I said I decided to wrap the exhaust in the titanium wrap and the hot difference is superb
Hi all
I have just picked up a 2006 Gallardo and see the 3rd brake light has some less out any idea if this is a shared VW group part please?
main dealer only charged me £40 for that so might be worth asking them
thank you Markii
They've quoted me £90 + labour so I guess it'll be over £200 once you add an hours labour, so though might be a common VW part that I can fit myself.

I managed to get the last one in stock at Eurospares at £60 delivered so am pleased. Thank you
that was alot of reading. very nice i can imagine the amount of time you put in gaining this knowledge
Here is a quick update.
Brake light switch - VAG P/n 3B0945511D, 1K2945511RDW, 6Q0945511.
Meanwhile i found an alternative part ERA 330545 which costs about $5.

For your consideration:
I found an alternative to OEM Air Filter UFI 3088800. It is a filter SB 271 made by SCT Germany. I bought them for about 4 euro each.
The size and material of the both filters are the same. Comparison is showed in the pic. 2 and 3.
I installed them quickly.
Enjoy it. :D

The OEM mirrors are reasonably priced (around $200) from the internet Lambo vendors, so not sure it will buy you much savings to find a cross reference in this case. Some Lambo parts are surprisingly reasonably priced, but they are the exceptions, and I think the mirror and wiper blades are good examples.

I went with the even less expensive, and never-leaks manual dimming mirror for around $30 that the same vendors sell.

Thanks Stimpy, no its a crazy price for the auto dimming at $1,745 for the 2005 pre LP model, and I found out that it was also fitted to a 2002 Audi A3 and A4 Audi part number 8L085751101C which is now discontinued by Audi. There is company repairing them in the US but I couldn't find anyone in the UK or Europe as yet.

Who are you asking to get these prices and availability? It's here online for $290 with 2 in stock, and I am sure if you call Glen at AHM, it will be even less:

I have always bought my parts from Eurospares, and I just found an anomaly, where the mirror for the 2005 Coupe update is $1,745 incl 20% sales tax, and for the same part to go on the LP640 is $269 so have ordered this and hope it fits the bracket.
I did actually find the AHM part also but we have to pay import duty and shipping.

Don't know if this is already posted in the 5 pages of postings here, but just in case, the fuel filters can be purchased from NAPA Gold FIL-3008. $20 vs $100.

I recall reading somewhere the front brake duct for the LP640 can be replaced with the duct from aircraft spruce. Does anyone know the correct diameter?
