I know there are a lot of topics about replacing the CATs, but somehow I can't see the complete picture.

So my challenge is to replace my standard CATs to a other solution, I do still have the standard exhaust on a Gallardo 2006 SE.

Questions I have:

  • Straight pipes too loud.
  • 100 Cell / 200 Cell replacement CATs - difference in loudness.
  • Be aware of CELL and how to prevent.
  • How difficult to mount for an amateur mechanic.
  • Removing left standard CAT really possible through wheel well.
  • Live in Europe so my sources for getting parts is limited because the UK decided to step out the EU :-( and importing is getting expensive.....
Saw some aftermarket 100 Cell CATs, think some chinese stuff - opinion on such a solution, 100 Zellen Sportkats LAMBORGHINI Gallardo 100 Zeller Sportauspuff

Thanks.

My understanding of the issue of OEM CAT's is that the internals can fall apart and get sucked back into the engine causing internal engine damage -for that reason I would only even consider reputable name brands. You'd hate to destroy an engine using a sub par CAT. Im not sure on the CEL count-but I know in my local 100 CEL will not pass state inspection so I have to go 200. Id check local laws.

Yes, the factory cats are getting to the age where they can become ticking time bombs. There’s been some that have blown the engine.

This goes into more detail:

200 cell is what you want. With 100 you will get a CEL (check engine light).

I'm a dealer for Larini, Fabspeed, Capristo, etc and can get them for you. I have the Larini on my own (2008) and they were just revised with new design an inconel shielding to prevent too much heat. Feel free to PM me with you UK address, etc. I can ship them anywhere.

I’m waiting for my Larini catalysts since 5 months now. I really hope they are worth the wait 😆

Where/whom did you order from? 5 months is an extreme amount of time to wait and still not receive an order. Even if the part isn't in stock, build times shouldn't be that far out. Some credit cards also won't do refunds after the 6 month mark which would have me a bit on edge

IMO, straight pipes are way too loud! @Jason B got me hooked up with the 200 cel Larini Sport cats and I think they are the best option. I could be wrong but I would stay away from the 100 cel’s as they don’t provide enough pressure and will definitely throw a CEL. They say the 200 cel’s filter enough to not throw a cel but honestly, pre-lp’s are very sensitive to changes in the exhaust and you will probably throw a cel anyway. I got cel’s just by adding my loc exhaust. So I got my SL tuned by @CFI Designs to get rid of the cel.

I have decent experience working on cars and I think it’s very straight forward even for the non-mechanically inclined. Just watch a couple videos on YouTube and go slow. It’s fun and pretty easy.

i don’t know about the cats through the wheel well. There’s a YouTube video of a guy doing it but I wanted to take my loc exhaust off because I wrapped it with header wrap to help with the heat.

I purchased a top speed Xpipe, and had a local shop here in Miami fabricate test pipes for me to replace the cats, I did not want to wait 6 weeks I've been quoted by all the vendors especially if it is going to be too loud where it's unbearable in case I want to take it right back off. So the muffler shop used my old cats to set up a jig to fabricate the pipes and they completed it in 2 days. I have a spyder so removal of the cats was through the rear once you take the bumper and exhaust out. Very easy but may not be the case with the coupe.

Thanks for the post and good points. The cats are only 2-3 weeks from me. I’ve had them pre ordered and they ship quick. I also have the Larini cat delete pipes which are the only pipes that come with inconel heat shields.

You know, this really sucks.
Ive had my G for 5 years now and read a LOT of pro's / con's on them but I have only just found out about the problems the early G's have with their Cats falling apart and destroying engines due to a process called "reversion" which apparently happens when you take your foot off the gas pedal causing exhaust gasses going back into the engine.
Christ, what the **** next with these cars????

@Wilson911 talked with David, Larini UK, about this case, the problem was the muffler the valves where the problem they where a long time in back order, the catalytic converters where not the problem so hope you get them soon.

@Tomaso, thanks, the fabspeed do look nice, but for me well overpriced - lets face it, it is a piece of metal nicely welded together. The other ones are 100 cell and definitly give a CELL message, and I don't know where they come from, Chinese ? Chinese ones I can buy also here in Germany for around 1500€ not bad priced.

I think te Larini 200Cell are a good option, still not a bargain but the competition is wel over that - if I buy I will get those ones.

However did some research and talked to some specialist, very well respected, and they say that when te car is well cared and maintained there should not be a problem with the CATs, so still wondering to buy......
