The Lamborghini Concept S at the Geneva Motor Show

Lamborghini has issued the following press release:

At the Geneva Motor Show, the House of the Raging Bull will present a new design study that renews a great Lamborghini tradition.

Like the 350 GTS and the Miura Roadster before it, the Lamborghini "Concept S" is a unique car, an extreme and spectacular expression of the Lamborghini brand.

Created at the Centro Stile Lamborghini in Sant'Agata Bolognese by Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Lamborghini Design, the "Concept S" is his extreme interpretation of an „open car". Using the Gallardo as a basis, Donckerwolke drew inspiration from the classic single-seater racing cars of the past to create this latest design study.

The classic single-seaters did not have a traditional windscreen, but utilised the so-called „saute-vent" (in French: a sudden change in the wind) in order to direct air over the head of the driver - and so does the "Concept S". These devices divide the cabin into two distinct compartments, giving the car an aggressive and futuristic look and also creating a space between them that acts as an additional air inlet for the powerful engine, which is positioned behind the seats.

An electronically controlled, retractable central rear view mirror allows the driver - when required - to see what is happening behind the car.

The aerodynamics of the "Concept S" have been optimised thanks to front and rear spoilers and a large rear diffuser.

I wonder if the Gallardo Roadster could look anything like this? Maybe retain the sweet dual cockpit design?

Gallardo Roadster

I have heard a lot of talk about the Gallardo Roadster, not the Concept S, being debuted at the Geneva Auto Show. But there is absolutely no indication that this is the case. Does anybody have any photos or info on the Roadster? I heard it has a legitimate top that folds into the body, like the F430 Spyder.

I met KLD at the Lambo-Stand today we had lunch together, hell of a nice guy and also the true enthusiast.

Like I said, the Gallardo Spider will be shown in September at the IAA in Francfort.

Wow very impressive, infact i really like the whole white theme.

Anyone know if the Gallardo spyder will have the same head and tail design as the concept or will it be exactly like the Gallardo except with a soft top.

Looking at the Concept-S design study referenced earlier and the actual
show car, the show car is somewhat toned down from the concept drawings.

I'm curious about the possible reasons for this. Maybe the actual Concept-S
was intended at the time it was built as a possible real street car depending
on feedback (remember that they built the Mucrielago Roadster pretty much
like the concept car based on feedback from the Detroit show). Also we hear
from other posts on this site that the real Gallardo Roadster will be shown
later this year.

Just in case I'm right and they're really looking for feedback on whether they
should build the Concept-S or not, I need to say the following!

Build It!

One thing that bothers me reading road tests of the Murci Roadster, is that
testers always complain about the lack of a legitimate top.

To which I say - Who cares!

I worry that such feedback may have prevented Lamborghini from
deciding to produce something close to the Concept-S.

As Craftsman (Dave) pointed out to me in a PM message, people who
ride motorcycles don't have tops, and there is no loss of popularity in
riding motorcycles.

I also point out the Jaguar XK-120 OTS. Now a classic!

So you either make a toneau for it when it's parked in the rain,
or make an interior that is designed to get wet and be drained and
cleaned easily, or don't drive it when it's going to rain.

Another idea that would be interesting is to create a bubble canopy that
retracts and forms a streamlined headrest when its retracted backwards,
like the bubble canopy on a 1950's USAF F-89 jet interceptor.

I can just imagine the Concept-S with two such canopy's !
I'm sure that Luc could make it look great!

In fact I see possible thoughts for a top in several places on the Concept-S.

Notice the blast screen's behind each seat. This could be the rear
attachment point for some kind of top, or canopy.

Also look at the side views, how flat the top of the car from the top front
of the windscreens to near the back of the engine cover is. The only thing
protruding into that surface are the blast screens, and they are pretty
low. It is a strikingly beautiful line, but also says something to me like
maybe something is intended to mate with this surface.

One can only hope!

Just been to the Geneva Motor Show and according to the people at the Lamborghini-stand, the Concept S is a true one-off.

The car is a real mock-up, doors don't even open apparently.

Good chance that the car will only be shown on this motorshow.
And will then find a place at the Museo Lamborghini in Sant'Agata.

I would love to see the concept S produced, even if in a very limited run of cars.
