I was getting ready to take my baby out . Let her warm up for about 5 minutes in the cold , then slowly took the car in neutral down my driveway . When i went to engage the shift lever into first , it snapped in 2 in my hand ! I had the Ball and the shaft in my hand ( lol ) and there was a lil nub of a bolt sticking out of the gate . Has this happened to anyone b4 ? I heard of a guy who did this on his 355 . Anyway i ordered another shift lever from Lambostuff and i have a personal friend that is a factory trained ( in italy ) Lambo mech that helps me with repairs that are not of great magnitude . The question is can i get to the job simply by taking the gate off ? Because when he was asking around at work he was told that it may have to be done by dropping the engine and tranny in order to reach it . He wasnt saying that was the way we were going but it was a possibility . He had said that he may be able to just install it just by taking the gate off and a simple replacement . Any body know how this would exactly get done ? Obviously i dont want to have to drop the engine out ofcourse . Can anybody confirm here that this can be done just by going through the dissassembled gate and simply taking screws out that hold the old rod and replace the rod and install the screws and cotter pin that looks to hold it in place ? Thanks .

ray thats a 6.0 set up . Is it the same on the 2002 murci ? It looks like to me that the tranny would not have to be lowered to do this , it looks like a matter of unscrewing some bolts , removing the old shifter rod and then retightening them , no ?
Could it be that simple ? Roy replied to me that he has seen this with a few other 2002 cars and the tranny did have to get lowered , the pic shows that it may be done easier though . I have that exploded pic of the shifter as well for my car and i was thinking that also . Roy also said that this was a common problem in 2002 and Lambo was aware of it and fixed the cars that werent under warrenty , you ever hear of that also ? Thanks . Joe

thanks alot don . So you think it can be done without dropping the tranny and doing it from the dissassembled shifter and gate from the top ? If so that would be great , and much cheaper . Do you know anyone who has done it that way successfully ? I appreciate the imput .

This happened to my first '02 Murci. Yes, it can be replaced without having to pull the engine.

Most dealers told me I had to pull the motor, etc. But I didn't think that made sense. I happen to know an engineer at Lamborghini and I emailed him about it. Below is a portion of the email I got from him:

As far as I've been told here it should not be necessary to do so; in our workshop the engineers usually do the following:

1) dismount the transmission shaft to the front axle (5 screws on the gearbox side and some more on the differential side), disconnecting the front differential from the gearbox and thus allowing access to the lower part of the shifter housing and the relevant 4 fixing screws (the front differential might have to be loosened as well, in order to allow the the removal of the whole shaft)

2) remove the fixings to the frame (4 screws on a big black bracket), transversal to the vehicle.

3) at this point you have the shifter housing itself, hanging under the tunnel; the only constraint left is a shaft (lever) from the shifter housing to the gearbox, which could be the hardest part of the job: removing the elastic pin. on the garbox side.

4) once you've done this, the whole shifter assy is in your hands, ready to have the lever replaced.

Shouldn't take more than 4 hrs, while removing the whole engine + gearbox might take a couple of days...

Had the same thing happen to my Murcie, Lamborghini fixed it as they were not happy that it had happened. They said you need to drop the box so you can get the stub out. It would appear that it happens because they have not threaded the gear lever far enough onto the stub coming out of the box. Someone I spoke to had theirs rethreaded and drilled and it was fine. This was on a Diablo.
