E-gear not engaging gears when running

Hi fellow Lamborghini owners!

I just picked up my first Lamborghini, a Murcielago from 2005, (after a PPI) from Germany. Drove it home for 6 hours with a smile from ear to ear. All was great, loved it!

The last 10 feet of the trip however (while driving into my garage) the e-gear warning light came on and won't go off.
I am stuck in neutral (luckily in my garage) and the box won't select R or 1st gear. I can hear the actuator trying to stick it into gear but it won't hold or engage properly. Also the trick by holding a peddle for more than 10 sec does not work.

When turning the engine off (but with ignition on) I an select all gears without any problems.

What could be wrong?

Much appreciated for your help!

Best regards,
Sebastian

P.s.
Also the central locking by using the key doesn't work any more. I just hear beep-beep but the car does not lock or unlock. Could this be related? This just happened right after I was stuck with the e-gear warning light.

The key thing is a typical isue that might acure if youre battery reasently has been flat..
Easy fix on the gallardo: make sure to keep both sets of keys available in the car... Insert key number one push close/open buttom while switching on the egnition. Dont know if its the same on the murcielago thoug.

common problems with egear failure is:

1. pump
2. actuator
3. relay
4. fluid level

Does the E-Gear pump prime during upshifting?

Check youre batery might be whats causing some of youre headache.

Certainly sounds like battery dropping voltage
Just the slightest drop in voltage will make the egear do that. Make sure when you first open the drivers door you hear a faint hydraulic prime sound for a few seconds, that's the egear pump working.

If the car has been siting at the dealer for a while and there is no history on battery change I would not hesitate to change it
No too difficult just a bit of time
Jack, lug wrench and basic tools
It's in front of rear wheel behind well panel on drivers side

Thanks for the tips guys. Can it still be the actuator failing, when I can select all gears while ignition is on but the engine is not started? I will check out the pump tonight. The battery I think is not the problem. I had just been driving it for 6 hours and start-stop was strong.

Trying the fix the problem I disconnected the battery from the car using the switch in the engine bay. This would have caused the key to stop working. Will try your solution to fix that Bjorn!

The actuator requires a minimum voltage to make the actuator work, I believe the voltage must be above 12.1-12.3 range. I had a new battery installed once and after a few months the battery developed one faulty cell and it caused the very same problem. This was on a 2004 murci

All too often the battery is the culprit. I would definitely start there.

Thanks for all the help guys! My voltage is definitely around 12.3v after having it on the tickle charger over night. The tickle charger tells me the battery is full and in good condition. Also when I open the drivers door I can hear the e-gear pump prime for about 5 seconds.

UPDATE: Somehow the box decided to shift into reverse and 1st gear again with the motor running (wouldn't before). Since I am awaiting my license plates I am unable to take it on to the public road to see if it will shift into higher gears as well. The e-gear warning light is still on and when with ignition on (but motor off) I can only shift into R, 1st and 2nd gear. Not to 3rd, 4th and so on..

Very strange..

P.s. are there any good computers (cables) out there to read out and delete ECU fault codes for my Murci? Also, where do I check the e-gear tank oil level? Have been searching in the manual and online but can't seem to find it.

You will not be able to shift into any gears other than R & 1, until driving. that logic is programmed into the TCU. Any generic OBD2 reader will pull faults from the ECU. To access the transmission faults, you will need to visit a specialist with Lamborghini capable software such as LDAS/LARA or Leonardo.

I don't thinks that's true. In the manual it clearly states that all gears can be engaged with ignition on (but engine off). I can now only select 1st and 2nd gear, but can remember when I just got the e-gear warning light, I could engage all gears with just the ignition on!

P.s. anyone knows how to locate the e-gear oil tank so I can check the fluid level?

Not really. However when the car was lifted at the dealer last weekend, they did indicate that the e-gear unit (next to the front differential) was sweating slightly. Therefore I would like to check the fluid level. But where this tank is located is a big mystery. Can't seem to find it anywhere…

I own an egear, you cannot shift into any other gears besides reverse and 1st when the car is stationary. Sorry, you cannot select 2,3,4,5,6 if the car isnt going fast enough to select them. Heck even going like 40mph or something, wont allow you to get into 6th, the car protects the clutch from having to 'lug' the car around by not having proper speed/rpms for each gears use.

This is true when the car is running! However when just the ignition is on, you can shift the car into any gear you want. Is says so in the manual and I was also able to do so. However since last weekend I am only able to shift into Reverse, 1st and 2nd gear (just the ignition on, ENGINE SHOULD BE OFF).

Got the car on the Lamborghini tickle charger. After a night it shows as being completely full. However, when I open the drivers side door and the e-gear pump surges, the tickle charger changes from completely full to half full. Takes an hour or so to get back to completely full. Maybe the battery is the cause of -e-gear acting up?

Ding ding ding ding, been saying that's a good possibility:wave:
Even it you replace the battery and it still continues at least it's cheap insurance for the future and its a simple couple of hourDYI item.
Stop reading and go get a good battery. Batteries plus bulbs is a great place, I bought a "X2Power" for about 250 out he door for my 6.0. Probably the same one for a murci (grp34 agm dual X2 auto) is the part code.

Update: the car has been with a specialist for a week now. The E-gear problem has been isolated to a bad (corroded) connector which was replaced and solved the issue.
The battery was not too fresh, so that was replaced as well.

Will let you know if this continues to be the solution to this problem. I hate forum discussions which don't conclude with a final remedy.. ;)

Thanks for the update. I don't like it either when final outcome is not updated...

So I got the car back last Saturday. The malfunction was traced back to indeed a corroded connector (I believe somewhere behind the seats). The mechanic told me that if water vapor (condensation) gets into these connectors (that are sealed with rubber o-ring), that this will happen from time to time.

He cleaned all connectors, re-lubricated them, cleared the fault in the computer and E-Gear is working as it should. After this we also agreed on having the battery changed as it would only hold like 70% of it's charge.

Problem solved - inexpensively :D

What was the particular "connector" that needed replacing? Was it the egear relay?

I think this is what Doubled were talking about when he said "e-gear paddle shift swicthes". The area i circled in red is the connector that get corroded. I replaced this unit in my old 04 Murci before. Part and labor from Lamborghini dealer run about $900 bucks.
