I bought my first countach. It is a 1986 5000 Quartro Us spec. FI

29,000 KMH Black on White leather. With gold Wheels
Came From California GLA12025. All books and
Records.

Im sure there will be alot of other things to correct, However
I was hoping for the ones that have been there done that.

A few Questions for the mechanicaly orinentated.

I put it on the lift at the location where I bought it.
There were three problems that I will correct when I receave
it.

1. Antifreeze leak, looks like it is coming from under the distributer.
Hard to tell. Is that where the Waterpump is located?
We could not quite identify it on the lift.

2. Fuel is leaking only when it is running under the fuel tank right
side. Cound not pin point whithout removing the riveted pannel.

3. One catalyc converter is running cherry red this was at Idle while
on the lift it was the forward cat.

Can anyone give me pointers on the above three problems.

Im guessing Waterpump??

Fuel leak I dont want to think tank beacause it leaks upon running?

Glowing red catalyic converter. Too Rich? Anyone?

Thanks in Advance

When I bought my LM002 both the Cats would glow cherry red after driving it. I ended up removing both Cats because they where so full of crap. Hope this helps

1- yes the W/P is directly under the Distrib.

2- Gas Leak? Likely a hose or fitting.

3- sounds like the Air Diverter Valves are hooked up wrong, but it could be excessive fuel, but at idle I'd look into the Air Diverter hose routing.

Oh, CONGRATS...:)

Thanks for the replys I cannot wait for it to arrive.
Hopefull next week. improper routing of Air diverter valves. I will check that.
Only one cat is red. I have to drop the exhaust to Tig weld where
the Bend enters the Muffler on one side at that point I
will Inspect the cats.

I was amazed at the records and books. I have the original manuals
aswell as service manuals and schematics.

I am sure there will be more to follow. But Im ready Bring it on!

Thanks Again guys!

1. Yup water pump, best to change all the hoses while you're at it.

2. Most probably faulty fuel lines - Max every 10 years change them - they tend to dry out, expecially with unleaded, and crack and brittle. If I reall correctly you do not need to touch the riveted panels - you should find a metal tube where the rubber hoses latch on to before having to remove panels.

3. Cats? haven't got the slightest - '86 Downdraft unleaded engine!

This thought crossed my mind. When removing cats did you remove the
Air diverters and pumps also?

What do you guys think about completely removing the cats and
air injection? I realize passing state emissions willl be a issue.
Is there some hidden performance advantage. I also noticed some cars
with what ressambles K&N air cleaners mounted directly to each
Throttle body.
