Default Gallardo LP550 (with spy pics)

SANT'AGATA BOLOGNESE, Italy — Lamborghini will unveil a face-lifted version of its Gallardo, likely to be called LP550, at the upcoming Geneva show.

The LP550 will be powered by a 5.2-liter V10 with direct-injection technology. Applying some of the high-speed powertrain principles Audi has introduced in its latest RS4 model, the updated Gallardo's FSI power plant will produce 550 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, making it 30 hp and 15 lb-ft stronger than its 5.0-liter predecessor.

The engine isn't the only piece of hardware to receive extensive modifications. Both the manual gearbox and the optional e-gear sequential transmission have been improved and are now capable of sending more power and torque to a lighter, more efficient permanent all-wheel-drive system. Upgraded brakes and a stiffer chassis help to harness the power and improve ride quality.

Designwise, the LP550's more aggressive character is emphasized with a deeply revised body kit, featuring completely restyled front and rear ends, whereas the cockpit remains largely untouched.

Lamborghini hasn't hinted yet at pricing, but with the current Gallardo fetching $182,000 in U.S. trim, expect the LP550 edition to easily top $200,000.

What do you think this will do to the price of the current model? I suspect there will be a price drop.

I think it is going to replace the current model.

I agree it is a replacement of the current model. What I meant was the new "facelift" should cause the pricing (for used Gallardos) to go down, much the way the Ferrari F430 replaced the 360 causing the 360 to have an instant price drop. Right now I'm looking at a couple of 2006-2007 Gallardo Spyders with a price range of 190K to 220K, it's my assumption when the new facelift is unveiled it will cause the price even on Spyders to drop. Of course the dealers I'm talking to disagree... We'll see What do you think?

I do believe that the price of the current Gallardo will drop once the new version is released, however I am not sure when the price of the Gallardo Spyder will drop… I suspect that Lamborghini will initially release only the coupe, then follow it with the spyder within a year or so. This might cause the price of the spyder to maintain its current level, at least until the new spyder is released.

The more I think about it, the price drop will also depend on how dramatic the changes are… I guess we might just have to wait and see what the new one looks like.

It appears the company is taking steps to protect the price on the "older" versions by increasing the base price on the 2008 coupe by a whopping $6,850, which is nearly 4%. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like historical increases have been in the 1-2% range - which includes the 2008 models that could be ordered in late 2007 (+0.8%) until this most recent price increase. I'm going through the process of buying New vs Used and this increase makes it difficult to justify buying new (you can find a dozen identical and very clean 2007s for $30-$40k cheaper). While the 2008's may hold their value a bit longer, given the higher MSRP, I gotta believe the '07's will be moving lower once the LP550 is out. Not that I'm paying attention....
