my mechanic tells me second dot and no further. car has loads of oil in the system so no need to be fiddling around at the top end and risking and overfill.

Between 1st and 2nd dot is where the oil needs to be.

Ignore 3rd dot, newer Gallardos have the dots in the 1st and 2nd dot spots ONLY. I knew this as I compared an older dipstick to a newer one. Filling it above the 2nd hole is OVERFILLING the car.
