Default EGEAR vs. 6spd MANUAL

Well I'm getting close to purchasing my G (about 2-3 weeks) and I am now debating egear vs. 6 speed manual gearbox.

EGEAR
  • Skippy starts and take offs
  • Test drove one and it did just that ^^
  • Seems faster than manual, seems more fun too
  • Does anybody use auto mode? is it like fully automatic? does it "skip" in automatic mode?
  • Putting it in reverse / neutral...there is a button on the left side correct?

MANUAL GEARBOX
  • Is it like shifting a regular car?
  • Is it hard to get in the "gates" or is it like normal?
  • What's the clutch like?
Well, looks like I am currently leaning towards EGEAR but, please provide me with good information so I can choose wisely and be happy with my choice.

Thanks,
BOB

my personal choice... is the 6 speed.. they are rarer to come by ...and it gives you more feel for the driving... after all you want a G... so might as well drive the hell out of it... its not like the car is going up in price ....

best entry level car there is realy... just my 2 cents..

I have spent a lot of time in both... I really do prefer the performance of the Egear. I don't mind the manual, it is still a great car. I still think that when you step into the world of a super exotic that if you can get a transmission that is not available in any old car it adds a little value to the ownership experience. I have driven it in auto mode and I hate it! I have never been in auto mode for more than a few miles before I switch back to shifting the car myself. Much more fun that way... Good luck, congratulations and no matter what trany you go with you are still going to love it!

e-Gear gives you the F1 racer kind of feeling. How pimp is that?

I was having the same discussion last week at MPH show, 6 Speed or E-Gear.

Well I wanted to ask a few questions.

1) What problems have members had with the E-Gear I heard there was recall a few recall, and pump failures etc.

2) Does the E-Gear work on the same principle as DSG, two clutches one selecting odd gear ratios and one selecting even gears?

3) Clarkson said the DSC Flappy Paddles was the only one on the market that actually worked? Its funny as hes gone and brought a 6 speed Gallardo, roadster.

I'm still undecided, I am looking to purchase a Gallardo at some point in the future. I've just come back from the Gauge in South of France after 5 days of epic driving fun. For that kind of blast I personally would have enjoyed it more with a manual, than an E-Gear.

There has also been question marks concerning, buying an E-Gear as an auto. Why is that? Is it rough and jerky on gear changes.

Having owned many manual transmission cars and being one of the stubborn ones who resisted Ferrari's F1 paddle shift system until just recently, I like the manual for vintage cars when you want to "feel the car", but after owning and driving extensively both on and off the track, a 2004 Gallardo with E-gear, a Superleggera with E-gear, there is nothing more fun than a Gallardo with E-gear, and most people seem to want the E-gear which will be a consideration if you ever decide to sell the car. If you haven't already purchased the car, hesitate no longer!! The Gallardo in any form is a blast!!

I have driven the 2004 Gallardo E-gear for over 7,000 miles. I push the car hard and have had no E-gear problems. In "Auto" mode the shifts are not crisp, and the system keeps selecting a higher gear than one would probably normally select, so the torque is not great when you stomp on it, but the car quickly downshifts and you get moving after the initial lag.

E-gear is not really meant to be an automatic in the traditional sense. The automatic mode is used primarily in slow traffic in cities, etc. or on the open road where you are going a long distance at a constant speed. When the E-gear system is in automatic, I have not found mine to be rough or jerky. It is simply slower and less responsive. I will definitely spec my next Gallardo with E-gear.

I hope this helps you with your decision.

My preference is the manual transmission as I simply feel that it is much more "man and machine" operating in unision. However, my '05 Murcielago took quite a while to sell with many of the buyers passing on it because of the manual transmission. Consequently, I have succumbed and ordered my new '08 with an E-Gear.... The real benefit - after a few too many drinks, my wife can drive us home!?!
