Default Battery Tender (Winter Storage)

Hey Guys,

I'm taking possession of a Gallardo hopefully sometime this week. Unfortunately I live in a brutally cold climate. It's literally -32 Celsius as I'm typing this, (-25.5 for the 5% of the world still using the imperial system; USA I'm looking at you here! )

Anyhow, silly question but I figured I'd ask... For those of you using a tender to keep your battery charged. Does the light in the trunk stay on or can you close it enough that it shuts off while the tender wires hang out?

Also, any other hints for tucking it away for the winter?

Thanks,
-Ingram

The latter is OK.

Pump up your tires an extra 10 psi to avoid flat spots. Or get tire cradles. Start up car and let warm up to operating temp at least once per month. Plus normal sh*t that Winnipegers need to do to any car sitting over winter. That's all!

Congrats to joining club Lambo!

The catch on the boot should hold the trunk open with a half inch of space so room for the wires to fit without pinching. The light goes out.

My 2006 trunk light goes out by itself after a few minutes.

That is correct. However I close mine completely and it did not harm the wires at all.

I think that it was discussed in another thread that this was a less good thing to do since it did not give any benefits, only wear on the car.

Welcome to the Lambo club!

I live south of Regina, so I feel your (winter) pain, hahaha.

For winter storage tips, this is a good thread:

Winter Storage

I have my car up on a lift, with a battery tender, and run the cord out of the front trunk, with the bonnet fully closed (I run the cord out at one of the front corners of the trunk, and carefully close it). No damage to cords or rubber seals, at all. If you wish, you can just gently let the front bonnet down onto the "latch", which will suspend the bonnet about half of an inch, allowing lots of clearance for the battery tender's wire. The front trunk light will go out after a few minutes. Don't forget to lock your car - this will put it into "fully off" mode, instead of "sleep" mode, which will put a drain on your battery to a greater extent than having it fully off.

Congrats! Pics!!!!!

That is wrong advice. Whoever said that should receive a thousand lashes!
That is the best way to seize an engine, and you see that all the time when cars sit for a very long time.

No wear. You must let the car warm up to normal operating temperature, to remove any condensation from the engine

The reason for starting it is to distribute oil on the cylinder walls, to keep them from rusting, keep oil seals lubricated, etc.

You will actually have MUCH WORSE WEAR if you do not do this!

Hey TT!

You just said something very interesting. I did not know that locking your car reduces battery drain? Am I reading this correctly?

What stays "ON" if the car is not locked? I never heard about a sleep mode....
