Hi folks,
In the market for either a used 2008/2009 Murcielago coupe or a new 2012 Gallardo. Love the lines of the Murcielago, but am not sure I can do without the creature comforts that come readily on the Gallardo. With the used Murcielago, what specific things would you look at when considering a used one? When are the big services, clutch changes, etc? Thank you in advance for your help! |

really neither has much in terms of creature comforts. maybe full power seats in the gallardo....a small shelf behind for storage too. do a full search on both and then test drive both. most will choose the gallardo if never owed an exotic then if your like me your go in reverse.... i always do the opposite though, ha
good luck |

EyeDoc......
First off when you find one you like and are serious about HAVE A PPI ( Pre Purchase Inspection) DONE!! Clutch replacement can run as much as $15k so that should be a priority. Confirm amount of clutch life left. Find out if the car has run aftermarket wheels; if so get details. Certain combinations can damage the transmission. When you have a car in mind get the vin# & post here & lambopower.com; someone probably knows about the car and can give you addl info.

How much should I expect to pay for a PPI? Who performs the inspection? Approximately how much does the 7500 mile service cost? I'm in the U.S. Thank you all for the helpful advice. |

This wont help if you already have a car in mind (your last post suggests you have), but I have purchased several exotics and always keep a few things in mind. First, always do business with a reputable dealer who has a track record of many happy customers - one who may have had some issues in the past and has a track record of doing the right thing to correct the issue after the sale. ALL car dealers have had issues. Its the nature of the business, but finding one that that will do the right thing after he has your money is key. They all say they will, but you want to verify that actually have in the past. Finding a well sorted car right up front will save you a lot of grief later - its worth it even if you dont get the LOWEST price - you want a well sorted car at a FAIR price. Its no surprise I recommend Roy Cats. I have purchased two cars from him and have been treated very well...which makes me a bit of a whore for him I guess. If you have not already, use the search function....you will find lots of happy customers but also a track record of fixing the one-off issues that have come up post sale. No, I do not work for Roy. In the used market you have to be very careful - in all cars - but exotics in particular. Lots of wankers out there with more money than sense. Which brings me to my other piece of advice.... always find out who the last owner was - my rule of thumb is NO celebrities or professional athletes. Why? Because most buy the cars for the "wow" factor, have no idea how to drive them, and take poor care of them (JMHO). You want the former owner to be a normal "car guy" that has probably driven it well (and I dont mean did not run it hard - they were meant to be driven hard) and taken care of properly (serviced regularly with a reputable mechanic). And as already mentioned....do a PPI. Will likely run you $500-$1000 depending on the amount of detail you expect. Any Lambo dealer, or an exotic dealer, should be able to help you. And lastly, if the PPI turns up something that is clear cut and easily fixed dont be afraid - get it fixed and buy the car. If it turns up somethings that your gut tells you is the beginning of a mystery, forget it. Move on. There are plenty of cars without "stories".
As far as the creature comforts go....you're on your own. I actually like the fact that my Murcie is "bare bones"....by that I mean no cup holder. Other than that, I have all I need..... |

well said market top !
clutch should last 25-30k if driven properly. if that car has egear you can read the amount of wear by a ecu hookup by the dealer and it should be very minimum. 5-10 percent used at most the 09's will come standard with ceramic brakes, about a 17k option in 08. if the 08 your looking at is listed 259 the msrp on that car should have been in the380- 390 range, meaning optioned up very well. give us more details if you have it. |
