Default Questions on buying a Countach

Hi all.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm new to this forum. My question is, I'm dealing on a 1985 Countach QV. I have not seen the car in person yet only pictures of it. The owner is letting it go for eighty two grand. I think that's a good deal. I've never owned a lambo before. I have owned Vipers and Z06 Vetts in the past but that's about it. Do you think eighty two is too cheap for a car like this? Most CT's I have seen are at least ninety five to well over a hundred grand US. The owner told me all major services have been done like new clutch, oil changes sparks plugs ext. My other question is, is it true that once you get up to ten thousand miles you have to put in a new clutch? And a new clutch is ten grand? How much does it usually cost to do services on these cars? And what are the normal things that usually need to be replaced on them? Can you do most of the work your self, or do you have to take it to a Lamborghini Dealer?

Thanks for all your help.

Sorry I just saw this, have not been following this site much lately.
Question, did you buy the car?
I own 3 right now and specialize in parts for them.

I think it's important to start learning about these cars long before you start looking to buy one....it sounds like you missed a good opportunity IF it was a good car..and that's a big IF. IF it has been properly maintained and is in good shape then they are quite reliable, but repairs are expenses...

Lambo dealers are usually not the best to work on these cars...you're better off finding a specialty car shop...other owners in your region are most helpful with this. The dealer guys (most) have only been trained on the new cars. NO clutches don't have to be changed at ten thousand miles....they get replaced when needed...came across one that needed a new clutch at 1800miles, another (my friends) still has original clutch with 30,000km. Depends on the driver. if you like to do burnouts, or stink at driving you'll be on the low end...if you can let the clutch out at 1200 to 1500 rpm then it will last you a long time. So apply power, all you want, after the clutch is fully engaged. Chad might not agree, but I'd say they really are NOT do it yourself cars. Small things, if you like to tinker, you could expect to easily do, but in general only you can determine your own comfort level, but most owners have Most of the work done...
Clutch prices are not ten grand...however, since the engine and trans comes out, it is usually a good idea to do many things that can only be done at the same time, or are just easier to do with the engine out. SO,
Plan on maybe just a clutch change for 5,6 or 7 grand (depends on shop and condition of parts, plus 2 grand for all the extra stuff that can be done at the same time. Good tires are hard to come by and there are a few other parts that aren't made anymore so they are Very expensive, but many other parts are just from other cars, BMW, Fiat and the like and there are often discussions about cross referencing parts.
The big thing you will hear about is get a PPI... a prepurchase inspection. Find someone that knows and works on these cars and pay them to inspect it before you buy it...start looking for these people and shops Now if you are serious. A ppi is the best thing you can do, also try to find an owner in your area, maybe the guy who bought this car, and try to learn from that person what it's like to own one..... other than that, don't forget the high sales taxes you will need to pay on the purchase price and plan to keep 8 to 12grand on the side for repairs as they come up..... also I think it's safe to say that every car will need something after you buy it... a few new knobs, maybe a manual or toolkit, maybe a spare tire or car cover. So plan on spending a thousand on a few small things after your purchase (400to 600for the ppi).
Good Luck
by the way, if your thread falls behind, add a comment (nicely) to keep it active......not everyone on here with advice is on here weekly. Plus there are other forums that you can also learn from.
(and Yes, I do own a Countach)

Thank you so much for all that info. I understand that these cars are over 20 years old now so it stands to resin that work will have to be done on them. I guess my real concern is, where would I go to get the car worked on when it comes time to change the clutch and take the engine out? Toronto is the closest Lambo dealer to me. Calgary would be closer but there is no Lmabo dealers there. But like you said, its maybe best to not go to a Lambo dealer to do work on a CT. I know one guy here in Winnipeg who has a CT. I can ask him where he goes to get his car worked on or if he does the work himself. I would prefer to wait until next year to make this purchase. I just finally finished a 32 Ford Hot Rod and I also finished my 78 Vette... So I dumped a few $$$$ this Summer. When I buy the CT I'm going to put down $35-$45 to show that I am serious. I'll have money saved up in other accounts for maintenance. I'm on the road for two weeks at a time so Its not like I'm going to rack up ten thousand miles in a hurry. But when I am home for the few days I am going to go for short trips to the city and rip around in the country. NO not on gravel roads! lol. I was also thinking of getting 17 or 18 inch wheels and tires for it, for the simple resin that you can get 17 and 18 inch rubber and rims allot easer then the standard 15 inch tires, and I would think the car would even handle better?? I would get a set of Legend Series-Champ 506 (5-lug;size.) They look very similar to 25th Anniversary Countach wheels so it wont look like a Tuner car with decked out wheels and tires. I would have to get these ones specially made. My concern would be so that the larger wheels and tires wont rub the fender wells. I have seen CT's with 18 inch wheels and tires. I will also for sure look into the PPI. Thank you again for your advice and comments. I love the CT so much! I just can't stop thinking about it!
