Default Just stumbled onto Countach

I've been looking at Ferrari 328s and have made several offers on cars. A good '89 will sell for about $50-$55K with 23-25K miles. The 30K service including belts, etc is about $4,000 from what I understand. The 328s seem to have stabilized pricewise, and good cars don't generally depreciate.

I stumbled across a a few Countoches today in the $89-$95k range. I was surprised that these cars were priced so low.

I'm probably the greenest person in the world right now on Lamborghinis but I have to start my due diligence somewhere. I've searched this site but have some general initial questions that I'd greatly appreciate input on:

1.) What years were the Countaches made? Are certain years more desirable?
2.) Is there a concern with cars under $100K?
3.) What are the average maintenance costs? How often are major services
required?
4.) Are these cars depreciating much, or have they stabilized like the 328s?
5.) Has anyone owned both cars and have any general input?

Thanks very much!

1)73-90,less than 2000 made; lp400, QV more desirable, early S also
2)could it be or not, you will not find easily a good lp400 for this price
3)don't know, i have one by 3 weecks now
4)i think prices are increasing while 328 are pretty stable
5)sorry no, don't like 328 much

Hi Alert1

Countach production spanned from 1975 to 1989. Like Emilio sail just a few shy of 2000 cars. From what I can gather, most of the USA Countaches are injected Anniversaries.

In the last few years demand for Countach and Miuras has gone up and supply has diminished a little due to major boo boos. Countach prices here in Europe have gone up about 50-60% in 5 years while the Miura median price, during the same period jumped up by 75%!

The Miura might stabilize but the Countach trend of 10 to 15% a year will probably continue for a few more years.

Countach prices here in Europe have surpassed those of 1991-1993 Diablos.

My personal Countach classification is as follows:

1. Downdraft quattrovalvole (OK so I'm a little biased)
2. LP 400 (most expensive Countach)
3. LP 400 S1
4. LP 400 S2
5. Injected quatrovalvole
6. Downdraft 25th Ann.
7. 5000S 2 valve
8. Injected 25th Ann.

The most common colors are Red, Yellow, White and Black.

Wing or no wing - the debate continues.

One of the best characteristics of Lamborghinis (with the exception of the P200 and P250 Urracos) is that the cams are not actioned by rubber belts but good ol' chains. Engine out procedures are white rare if the cars are treated correctly.

Parts availability seem OK for the time being. I have a 4 valve - I started off with a well kept car with no issues and haven’t had any to date. Just change of fluids and plugs every (changed plugs after 8,000 KM and could have waited longer).

My suggestion is NOT to buy a project car.

If you do happen to buy an F car - think about a 512 BB - much better car than a 308/328. My 2 cents.

Alex

i agree you can't compare a countach with a 308-328, it is more likely a BB or a testarossa, could i say better

Hi Emilio,

LP400 and LP400S S1 (even a red one ) are definitively the most desirable Countach in terms of history (or investment...)
But why would a LP500S QV be more desirable than a 2V ?..

hi eric
outside they are the same car(only the bonnet and front tyres are different),
the interior is also identical, QV is 10 kgs more than 2V,.....
but the 5000 s has a 4.7 375 hp engine while QV has a 5.2 455 hp engine (48 soupapes)and for what i know QV is 25 KM/h faster and 1 full second quiker in 0-60 MP/h
QV are the fastest countach ever on the straight line, no doubt about it

The interior of the QV is not identical it changed with MY 1987 drastically, the QV got a lot of improvements like the 25th got overt the QV.
A good tuned LP500s is near to a QV, of cause a QV is quicker but only a correct example, we had QV which ran like lazy dogs because of detuned carbs and ignition.
My QV and a friend 25th were exactly as fast, now mine should be faster after all is tuned correctly.
AMS of Germany measured the Lp500s with 286kmh, the QV with 298kmh, the LP500s had a wing the QV not. The problem is the aerodynamic drag factor, the car is a wall in the wind, therefore 50bhp more make almost no difference in top speed, sad but true...

hi raymond,
could you tell me more about differences in the interior of the 2 cars?
i have seen some pics and i haven't seen many differences...

as you said performance for old lambos are pretty different, even from car to car
i remember a 5000s 270 KM/h top speed with no wing and a 298KM/h for a QV

Hi anyone in Europe,

How much would a complete paint cost on a 88.5 countach in France, Switzerland, Gemany or Italy (from original red, damaged all over the body to..say..blue acapulco metallizato)?... proven quality labs who know how to work on a Countach (things like..don't remove the wind screen !) contacts would be nice ... Thanks ...my guess is around 5000 Euros;

By the way...same question for re-doing the interior (from black to..say..white ) ?...would it be around 10000 Euros ?

Cheers

ps: Hi Emilio...well..why not ?

you 'll never know...
i think this car should come for 60-65000 euro, so you could spend the remaining money to make it a good looking one
