My '76 P300 was missing its Carello rectangular driving lights when I bought the car but I was lucky enough to find a brand new pair on good old Ebay and amazingly the seller turned out to be a fellow Urraco owner!
The car 20204 has black bumpers and the lamps require mounting brackets but I have no idea what they look like nor what shape they are. Although it would be easy to fabricate a pair I prefer authenticity so does anyone have a photo or a dimensioned drawing they could please post? Thanks Chris |

As I have also the black bumper, I'll make some photo. Congratulation for your choice. Only think that I know about your car is that it was before in South Africa and that it is gold with beige interior can you confirmed this? Also it will be nice to share some photo with us. Also if you can tell me the body number of your car, this one is stamped at the rear of the engine compartment near the engine cover stay bar and beggin by 1060.

Hi Eric,
Some photos from you will be much appreciated. The body number is 1060 599 and you are correct, it was assembled in South Africa in 1976, bronze with beige leather and fabric centre panels. In 2002 it was sold and shipped from SA to UK. She is a nice totally original example with a recorded 17500km and was repainted Rosso (I think) red here in UK. As you will see in the photo it has an unusual feature of two nicely crafted body badges each one located below the Bertone wing badges which state "IMM (Intermotormakers) Specially built in S.A. for J.W.Mitchell" One is written in English, the other in Afrikaans. I wonder if other cars assembled by IMM were personalised for their owners in this way? Last year I commissioned an engine rebuild by Colin Clarke Engineering and a complete mechanical check and where necessary a refurbishment of the brakes, steering and suspension so she now runs very well and reliably. The sodium filled valves were replaced as were all rubber part, cv joint boots, seals, hoses, bearings etc. but despite a very long time in storage she is generally in very nice (not concours) condition. Hi Jalpaboy, it is indeed a very poorly documented history of the involvement in SA of Intermotormakers (IMM) who were set up in about 1975 to officially import CKD Lamborghini and Lotus models.
In the case of Lambo, IMM took kits of parts from Italy to assemble Urraco, Countach and Espada models. A automotive journalist friend in Cape Town is currently preparing an article which will describe the full facts with pictures, all of which is available from his friend who worked for IMM. I am told only 5 Urraco P300 were assembled, two are known to survive, one of which is 20204 |

The relationship was official between Lamborghini SpA and IMM who were building under licence in SA therefore no question in my mind of the authenticity. IMM sent their chief engineer to Sant'Agata to learn from the workforce how the cars were assemble. He also supervised the kitting of the first batch of cars shipped to SA.
Having recently had work done on my car by Colin Clarke Engineering who if you are not familiar with his business is generally regarded as being the UK marque specialist in period cars designed and built under the ownership of Ferruccio Lamborghini, Colin said the IMM cars he has seen, most of which are Espada, fewer Countach and my Urraco P300, they appear to have minor assembly differences, routing of pipes, cable harness etc but generally more time had been taken in the attention to detail of assembly. There appeared to be no unique components sourced in SA, everything being shipped as a kit of parts, even the period Italian Autovox Melody stereo cassette radio. According to sketchy information I was told during their short life IMM built approximately 10 Countach, 10 Espada and 6 Urraco P300's. No doubt when the press article research is completed later this year and in advance of the 50th anniversary, a wealth of new factual information will hopefully come to light. |

Thanks for the info. I find the history behind these vehicles fascinating and I had never come across this. It is cool that there is this small group of vehicles that have this bit of history that sets them apart from the other vehicles.

Hi Ohlgren,
The intention is to have the article published by May in a major automotive magazine who publish globally. I will post when the I receive details of the press release. |
