The cost of creating a carbon chassis for the Murcielago would significantly inflate the price of the car and would have to position the car in a different market segment. If they did it they would have to give it a different name altogether.

As mentioned, Lambo is after a certain market. The ultra light, ultra rare $700K+ supercar market is not what market they are in. It's like asking why does Scion not make as 400 HP Mustang GT stomper. It's not that they can't come up with the technology, it's just that's not what market they are after.

But want about simply do a RS version like the Porsche, it doesn't have to be so extreme to loss some weight. Even a mere 300 lb will help a lot. If Porsche can cut 200~300 lb, so can Lambo. By the way, using 4 lighter wheels can save 60~80 lb already

I need my radio - to hell with all that " listen to the engine BS!" that works for the first 20-30 mins

it on ! Maybe once, right after I got the car. Later, when Bob Seger the rock star drove one of them, I turned the radio off on him! The engine was the music. Even on long trips. Larry |

Back to the topic... I think Lambo can and should come up with a lightened Murcielago something of an SV or GT, rear wheel drive and bare interior. Something to homologate the Murcielago R-GT. Its all possible and would be down to marketing decision.
However for the Murcielago replacement, I speculate around 2009/2010 I think some major redesign of the chassis may be required. The Murcie chassis is essentially square tubular steel which evolved from the first Countach. Long time. They might add more carbon composite sections or use Audi's aluminium expertise and use aluminium space frames or bonded aluminium extrusions like the Gallardo and now even the 599GTB. They experimented both a monocoque and tubular steel for the Countach and the latter was chosen because it had the most stability for the kind of power the Countach was expected to make though that chassis was very expensive to make. This chassis design could be nearing its limit with the latest Murcielago. |
