Default Re : Interview with Winkelmann

found this on some newspaper's website. Stephen Winklemann CEO of Lamborghini on how to sell a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster, priced at $311,000?

Q. So what are the basics of selling a high-end car?

A. You have to have the right people. It’s all about people. Usually our customers are wealthy people. They live the lives of those who are possessing cars like Lamborghinis and driving cars like Lamborghinis. They usually have dealings with other luxury businesses. And most of them have a lot of friends driving more than one (luxury) car.

Q. How do you tell a real customer from somebody who just wants a look?

A. Nowadays, you don’t recognize a real customer. Because of the way the dress, the way they act, it’s all different. One thing is common to everybody: 99.9 percent of our customers are male. Usually, they are entrepreneurs. They are self-made men.

Q. So how do you create the buzz, the desire to buy?

A. One thing is that you always have to build less than the demand. This is one of the biggest things. Shortage, high-pricing and history, this is creating the buzz around the brand. … To buy a Lamborghini, it’s 100 percent emotion. If you miss this, if you produce more than the demand, you destroy the brand and the branding of the company. Then you have discounts, you have stocks, and then nobody is that interested anymore in buying this car.

Q. So how do you control that?

A. The big thing is we have a limited volume. There are only a certain number of people around the world who can spend such money to buy a car, this type of car. The regular car companies have the possibility to produce many more cars. It’s the opposite of the luxury business.

To some people the Lamborghini is nothing more than an automobile. They have no understanding of the emotion, the passion these vehicles inspire. Behind every model there are/were people who wanted to produce the best they possibly could. Afficionados, enthusiasts, and gearheads can all appreciate the planning, the attention to detail, and the intensity of emotion in creating a special machine.

Somehow i see people keep on looking for lamborghini to make new line of cars. Has anyone thought about the cost versus supply and demand. What is one reason including lamborghini and other supercar makers are bought and sold around the world? Somehow, such exclusivity and production does not meet the bank. Although now nurtured under the wings of audi ag., the lamborghini must be staying independent and profittable. Otherwise, you will see the house of bull in someone else's hands again. Gallardo is the tool used as the bread and butter for the company while the murcies are the flagships that equally represent the ideal and prospection of the lamborghini. i do not consider 5000 units on the road to be non-exclusive. In fact, its production rate is mere 1200 units year for coupe and even less for the spyders. that is nearly one third of its rival 360 and 430s. Are those Ferraris as common as camrys and chevys since its produced three times the rate? I quite disagree. Most supercar producers only have one line with seldom variants, and so did the lamborghinis. This is a rare occasion the company offers two distinctive models at the same time. You want something more exclusive than gallardo, you have the murcie and its roadster along with its extreme variants for even more exclusivity. Nothing happened to the limited volume. The business is nothing without profit. Newer limited edition models have been out multiple times including nera, momo edition, and the SEs. Need more???? civic....its got a lot of editions and variants including the rare type-R.
