Hi Chriswill

Small world and all that. I’m from UK, live in Phuket, and have just bought a place in KL under the ‘Malaysia my Second Home’ scheme (MM2H). Amongst other benefits, I can import one car tax and duty free.

This is a huge concession – import tax alone exceeds 100%. So I’m bringing my Countach from UK: it’s in a shipping box right now.

I’ve found what appears to be an excellent official Lamborghini dealership:

Mr Tham Hon Yaw
Lamborghini Kuala Lumpur
No 2, Block B, Lot 4900
Jalan SS 13/7
Subang Jaya Ind Est
Subang Jaya, Selangor
47500
Malaysia
Tel: 03 5637 1280
Fax: 03 5364 4782

The guys there are extremely friendly and helpful. Labour rates are around MYR 120/hr.

They sell new cars too; there was a Murciélago in stock in the showroom. They told me they have sold a few this year already.

The only possible downside is that parts are expensive because of the import duty. But this is clearly offset by the labour rate.

Are you in MY already, or are you moving in the future?

Hi guys,

I lived for 3 years in Malaysia (KL then JB) before being moved to Jakarta, and, honestly, I wouldn't dare driving a Lambo in Malaysia..
The only rule on the Malaysian road is an aggressive "me first !", and that doesn't go very well with such cars. Besides, if you're Chinese looking or an expat (or even worse, a Chinese expat ), the reaction could be even worse...And the big majority of the roads are not good enough to have a pleasant ride.
However, I have a few friends in Singapore who travel to Malaysia with their Lambos or sport cars for track days, which are very cheap, safe, and very well organized.

Btw...Countach-in-KL, where about in Phuket do you live ? I may visit a couple of friends living around Rawai (South East) for Christmas...would be nice to meet you..

Well, Ayanami, I’ve been offered all sorts of advice, encouragement and warnings. I know the roads are not good in places, and I *am* concerned about the many stupidly high speed bumps. But I won’t be using my Countach to go shopping in the back streets of KL!

But I do fancy some trips up to Cameron Highlands, down to Singapore, and back and forth to my place in Phuket. Most of this is highways, which in general are very good.

And I’m not so sure the arrogant and aggressive driving style in Malaysia doesn’t actually go very well with Lamborghinis!

I don’t understand what you mean by the ‘reaction’. Have you had first hand experience of negative reaction? Or have your friends? I was also told that most other drivers keep out of the way of ‘expensive looking cars’ for two reasons: 1. they are scared of the potential repair bills and 2. There may be some rich powerful local driving with whom they would not care to start a war.

I’m building a house in Surin Beach on the West coast of Phuket. It’s a long way from Rawai, but who knows? Please PM me when you have dates.

Hi Abunawafff

The ‘Malaysia My Second Home’ scheme is a package of concessions to encourage foreigners to move to Malaysia, or at least to purchase a long-stay holiday home there.

It’s actually very good.

The points which persuaded me were:
1. Capital gains tax reduced from 30% to 5% on any property held for five or more years under the scheme.
2. Import of personal effects (within six months of grant of the visa) duty free.
3. Import of one private motor vehicle, already owned overseas at the time of the visa grant, completely duty free. Or purchase of one locally-made vehicle duty free.

Compared with Thailand where I live most of the time, these concessions are a delight.

Also, a foreigner can buy freehold property in his own name, without formality. The legal system is robust, and based on English law.

And beautiful, even quaint, English is spoken everywhere.

I used an agent to get my MM2H visa and to deal with the car import formalities. It was easy. Their website is www.mm2h.com
