I just got my Countach (with the USA bumper removed, and what I think is the Anniversary bumber strip) this last summer. If it was drilled for mounting bolts/screws, a european style plate might fit, but not a plate of USA dimensions. Washington State requires a front plate on all vehicles unless an exemption for a particular vehicle has been issued already.

I had no intentions of drilling holes where no holes had gone before, so I took a trip to the State Patrols main office here and talked with the senior Trooper about this. He gave me a number to call to apply for an exemption, which I have not done yet, and some info that surprised me a bit.

Why a front plate? Car theft. Most people stealing cars want a plate that is not on a list for patrolmen or police to watch out for so they remove the original plates and steal a plate off another car. The officer said most thiefs will only take enough time to steal one plate off a donor car to reduce their chances of being caught during the plate theft. That is why if you don't have a front plate, they pay particular attention to you and your rear plate.

But his next statement is what consoled me a bit!! He was THE senior trooper in a large metropolitan area with many years under his belt. He said that in all his career, he has only issued one ticket for the lack of a front plate and that was only to hammer a serious offender that he could not issue a ticket that penalized him enough for what he had done. He said very few tickets for this offense have ever been written with no other major infraction implicated at the same time.

The lack of a front plate, on a rare or exotic vehicle, is not something that should make any of us worry. However, if we are doing something wrong, it can, and will, give the gendarmes an excuse to pull us over and add to the primary offense. By itself, according to my source (and one after him, just to make sure) there is no problem with these higher end vehicles in and of themselves not carrying a front platem unless they are being a jerk in some other manner.

If the truth were known, most of the cops are just as big of a car buff as any of the rest of us. If you are pulled over for no front plate, be the gracious host and take them on a free tour of your vehicle, show them the really cool features and just say that the car did not come with mounting holes for a license plate. Then ask them if they would be comfortable taking a drill to the bumper of one of these autos if it were their own. I can't imagine any one of them saying, "sure, I would not hesitate to drill the F..k out of the bumper of a car like this!!" Really, this should be the end of the problem at this point in time, UNLESS you have done something else seriously wrong!!!

Arround this area, don't worry about a lack of front plates, unless you have something else to worry about also!!

This is an issue for Ferrari's as well, and as a result I have designed and sell a front license plate holder that uses the tow hook threads for attachment.

No drilling or holes any where.

Many just keep the whole thing in the trunk and "apply" as necessary.

It works and it's only $35.00!

How does it look? Do you have pictures of it? Would that work on Gallardo?

A replica is illegal im most states.

I drove for 7 years without a front plate here in NJ, and then got a ticket - no other offenses - he pulled me over for no front plate. The officer was actually joking around a bit, and I thought he was just doing a "normal" stop - till he handed me the $45 ticket and said, "Have a nice day".

I should have told him, "But officer, I saw the plate fly off when I was doing 160mph on Rt. 80"!

I had been stopped 3-4 times previously for the plate violation, only to get a warning.

I know I'm NEVER going to put a front license plate on my G Did you have your front plates in the car? I plan on keeping the front plate on the front passenger side visor. This may be my last resort to squirm out of a ticket

You will still get a ticket. By law, your front plate has to be fixed to your front bumper. By having it in your trunk or in the corner of your window or on your visior will still get you a ticket. If you get a "nice" cop, he might give you a warning or let you off this time... but its just a matter of time til you get a cop that dosen't take any crap and slaps you with a ticket.

There is a loophole on this. If you have a family member in a different state (that doesn't have front plates), you can register the car in their name (in that state) and then you don't have to worry about a front license plate

We could certainly machine a post for the Lambos. I'd just need to see what they have, and I do have an acquaintance locally who has a Gallardo.

You can see the Ferrari unit at: http://dynamtechgroup.com/ferrari-li...ate-holder.php

We have them for Porsche as well. We just have not had time to post the photos.

They would all look the same with the exception of the location.
