You just have to have credibility. They can spot a phony a mile away. Some dealers are better than others. In my case, even though they could Google my name and see that I really was CEO of decent size company with lots of major press, they completely ignored me. The one that didn't and took me seriously from the start got my business. I think it helps when you set an appointment, be upfront, don't overstate a thing. I know of buyers who went in and did their test drive when they said upfront that they just didn't have the funds together yet. Being honest may bring out some financing options not yet considered. Much harder to do when you've been blowing smoke about mony you don't have. If you bull**** it will catch up with you because you ultimately get to know your dealer very well and the owners are in a very small community, especially with the Murcs, and you won't be that welcome if you're blowing smoke from the start. If you look at all the forums, you will see that the actual owners who post is a very small group. The majority are enthusiasts and most of us who are owners were once enthusiasts waiting for the right time to buy. Every dealer is different. Just go in and be honest and chances are you will get your drive and possibly the car you want!
I saw one guy go into a dealer when I was there for service and he was trying way too hard, going on and on about what his family owned. He didn't know that I'd seen him before and knew it was bull and was trying an entirely different line when I last saw him which must have failed that time.
