Default ATTENTION Lamborghini Owners in ONTARIO

I just uncovered a startling reality about car insurance in Ontario. I innocently called my broker (TD Meloche Monnex) to advise that my wife was trading in her Murano on a Highlander. So the agent asked if the incoming Highlander has had any modifications whatsoever to appearance or performance. That was a no so I was fine, however it sparked me to ask what the deal there was. Ie. how much do rates go up when you modify your car. I was told that ANY modification that results in performance increase or appearance change INVALIDATES the car's coverage. Of particular note was custom exhaust. It is a "BIG NO" in the words of the agent I was on the phone with.

I subsequently spoke to a friend at another company (Co-Operators) and she backed it up 100%. She said her group "doesn't write policies on modified cars."

So you bought your Lamborghini and it was stock, so you got your insurance. You may or may not have been asked if the car has been modified. However if you have subsequently altered the car in any shape or form you may well have set yourself up for a nightmare of denied claim and misrepresentation status.

It is at the very least worth a call to your agent. If you have a modification or if you're thinking about one. And you're walking on egg shells if you have a modified car that they don't know about. You've got to get it back to stock before you get nailed for misrepresentation. And that could happen from you having called to inquire about your mod.

It's a BRUTAL situation in Ontario. Insurance companies just don't want modified cars. You don't have to google very deeply to find some horror stories on other (more suspect) forums on this topic.

I am using TD as well in Ontario. For the G I was going to import, I got a quote on one for sale from Lamborghini Dallas, during the phone call they did indeed ask for modifications. I listed everything that was modified from the 2006 Spyder which included:

Carbon fiber rear diffuser
LP560 Front bumper
Painted wheels
Larini Exhaust
3M Clear Bra
Kevlar Clutch

They originally refused to insure it, but I got a written email from the official Lamborghini Dealer selling the car stating that all of these were cosmetic modifications and in no way affected the performance of the car, and they agreed to insure it.

I didn't end up buying that car as it was sold to somebody else, but I did purchase a 2008 Spyder shortly after, they don't have a problem with cosmetic mods that IN NO WAY affect performance. That means no twin turboing your car if you want to be with them.

I don't know who you spoke to, but my quote for both Lamborghini's went up to the underwriters themself who are above TD (Security National), and they approved it both times.

You damn right you did, bruno! I was complying with every rule and regulation for transporting a sporting rifle for legimitate hunting purposes. I had every right to go right through that airport with but one extra trip to the customs people to verify that the serial number of the rifle I brought into the country was the same one I was bringing out. So don't give this crap about your security concerns when I'm transporting a sporting rifle in my checked-in luggage that had to pass inspection when I checked in. I had as much right to go through that airport as you...without harassment. You talk like I was trying to get aboard with M-16 as my carry-on.

not at all.

I pointed out that you, with the distinction of having a gun, should reasonably expect to have a different experience at the airport as someone without a gun.

Pretty straight up if you ask me. A no-brainer.

Shall we poll it?

If you can't mod your car without insurance giving you crap, I say don't buy a Lambo. What about clear bra and tint? Does that void the warranty also? The car does not come from the factory with those.

I'm with Recon40.

And canada is WAY too much of a nanny state for my tastes. I'm a responsible adult thank you very much.

If that is canada's rule of insuring cars and transporting hunting rifles, then that's another reason to not go there.
