I stay a little ways back from the light or for that matter any car in front of me when I pull up to a light.

Not all people pay proper attention to the road and it allows me to pull up a few more feet to avoid being rear ended.

Its always better to have that safety margin than fight with an insurance company over damages, even if you are in the right.

It's like 12097 said...at least for me. You give yourself a little extra room so when the little high school girl on her cell phone, who is not paying attention, realizes she needs to stop while you watch in the rear view you can pull up a little without going into the intersection and giving her a little extra time to brake....she'll need it.
