I have two recommendations for the motor and transmission.
General Motors (Chevrolet) LT1 motor from a Corvette would be a good option. The better option though, IMO, would be a "crate" 350 (meaning that the engine is shipped to you in a crate, put together, and the 350 is the number of cubic inches of displacement - that's 5.7 liters ). This is another GM powerplant, and you can get many power options (meaning differenet horsepower ratings - I've seen up to 600 hp). This is also a very easy motor to work on, little to zero emissions controls, and with the right transmission (automatic) you can get pretty good mileage, while still having plenty of power to move that Caddy. The transmission I would select would be another GM source, the TH400, or commonly referred to as the turbo 400. This is a 3 (?) speed automatic with overdrive, that when paired with a torque monster 350, you'd move along just fine. And you will CERTAINLY need to upgrade the brakes and suspension. These are just a couple of suggestions - and these are INEXPENSIVE AND EASY TO FIND. |

Taurean Bull is WRONG about the transmission. The GM Turbo 400 is a 3 speed trans and takes lots of power to turn it.
If you can find one, what you want is a 4L60 Turbo. This trans is a 3 speed with a 4th gear OD and a lock up converter. You DO NOT want the 700R4 (dating from around 1980 up to around 1987 or 88)turbo, this is the weaker trans, and is the early version of the 4L60. The 4L60 came in Chev cars dated from ( I believe) 1989 and later, up to around 1991 or maybe 92. After that the trans became the 4L60E, the electronic version of the 4L60. This you also do not want as it requires an ECU to operate it. There are good and bad reasons to us this trans. A better choice weight wise and cost taking less HP to turn, but still a 3 speed, that would be the Turbo 350. Chadbourn Bolles 803 798 3044 |

Jeez, Chad, it was just a thought.
You do make a very good case for the 4L60. I remember having an El Camino with the TH350, and I just assumed that the TH400 would be better, I didn't know that it woudl take more power to turn. But when I think about all of the 396's, 427's, 454's matched up with the TH400, that makes perfect sense. Better yet, abunawafff might just be better off if he has California Performance Transmission build him something custom. ![]() |
