Default What is the trick to getting snap rings off?

I have a snap ring tool, but I can't seem get the snap rings to come off when I compress it on the shaft where it holds the bearings on.

Any advice on how to get these snap rings off?

Do you have a picture of it. Are you expanding it or squeezing it closed??

I am squeezing it close. It holds the drive shaft bearings in place.

I usually squeeze it with the pliers and then take a thin screw driver and put it in the gap and pry it gently outward. Most of the snap rings have a small indentation on the outer edge by the hole. I will post a picture tomorrow showing what I am talking about.
