Last year I had the slave cylinder replaced on my '98 SV. There is a slight rumbling noise coming from the clutch area. It's not enough to cause great concern, but yet enough to irritate you. When you depress the clutch even slightly the noise goes away. Any ideas what this could be? Is it the throw out bearing, or is it possible that something is loose or needs adjusting??

The clutch assembly is simply a pressure plate bolted to the flywheel with a splined disc between them. They cannot make noise unless the disc is slipping, and then that noise is not something defined as a "rumbling" noise. All that is left is the throwout bearing (or a bad input shaft bearing on the transmission). Since you say it goes away with the slightest pressure on the clutch pedal, that indicates a throwout bearing on it's last leg of life. I would hesitate to diagnosis it as a bad input transmission bearing as these seldom cause a problem.
If very light pressure on the clutch pedal causes the noise to subside, suspect the throw out bearing. If It takes a heavy application of the clutch pedal to stop the noise, suspect the input bearing to the transmission. Good luck!! |

The noise is there whether engine and tranny are warm or cold. I'm sure I had the throw out bearing replaced when I had the clutch replaced last year. I noticed the noise after I had the slave cylinder replaced. Any chance it could be related to that?
