You have to unmount the carbs and the intake and then remove the valve covers.
Didn't do this when the engine was out ![]()

He obviously did not set them up right on the bench, but at least he can do them right without having to take it all out again !!
I am still waiting for my new fuel tank and the dash board ![]() |

Terry,
The valve buckets or tappets in a 2 valve car are more involved to adjust. My suggestion is to check all cam to bucket clearances with a feeler gauge. This will require checking each cylinder when the valves are in the fully closed postion, meening you will have to rotate the engine by hand in 60 degree intervales to get each cylinder to TCD. Pull the spark plugs to make rotating the engine easier, then make note of all clearances. Now you will have to remove the cams, then the bucket or tappet on whichever valves need shiming. The spacer shim sits between the top of the valve and the bucket, seeing that you have valve train noise you will have to get larger spacer shims for whatever extra clearance that you determine to takeup the unwanted space. After this has been done you can replace the cams being careful to ensure proper alignment and timming. Best of luck Sincerely Victor PS: Four valve cars are much easier but that does nothing for me or you |

Terry,
it takes quite some time to pull the cams to adjust the valves, but you can loosen the chain tensioners and lift the cams up, leaving the gears & chains on, to get to the problem shims without fully removing the cams saving quite a few hours of very hard work. I could only give a guess and say about 16 hours maybe someone else can verify this. I would make sure you have a variety of spacer shims I do not know what sizes are available but they are small and fit over the top of the valve stem and below the bucket. I wonder did you have noise in the valve train before the rebuild? The reason I ask is possibly when you were doing the recent service the spacers got mismatched with one another, I do not know if their is a said standard size shim all I know is that you must get the tolerance between the bucket and the cam in spec or you will either have valve train noise or could start hanging a valve open, niether being good.
Sincerely Vic best of luck ![]() |
