One of the biggest problems is to have an engine lift which can lift high enough like the one on terry's picture.
When you have enough lift height it's not a problem to take out the engine/gearbox as one piece. My mechanic takes the engine out in about 3 hours, he got quite experienced after 2 QV's and a 5000s...
For me this is the most impressive picture, it shows how big the engine/gearbox pair is compared with the entire car:
