Default DIY Replace Alternator

I am going to replace the alternator in my 1991 Diablo.
Has anyone done this?
If so, can you give me a step by step on how to, or point me in a direction to see pictures and process to unbolt and dismount the alternator?

I have on order a Bosch A170 with 115 amps. I am 99% sure this is the one for my car.

ANy help would be great.

Thanks all.

I replaced my alternator in a 91 Diablo last July. I did not take any photos but it was straightforward except here are some pointers to help. I first tried to remove the alternator without removing the rear wing and deck panel. Go ahead and remove it as it comes off easily. The one problem I had was physically removing the alternator out of the car as there just was not enough clearance to get it past the fram or exhaust. I finally had to remove the pulley from the alternator with an impact wrench to get the clearance I needed to get this out. This could be because I have Borla Exhaust and possibly interfere more than the standard exhaust. Even so, the repair was not hard, just takes 3x longer than replacing the unit on my vette. Hope this helps.

Just at a quick glance, there is only one bolt visible. How many bolts are there?

There should only be two. One that is the pivot point and one that slides to adjust belt tension. Make sure that you disconnect the battery first. This will prevent any mishaps.

are you saying that I use the battery disconect behind the seat, or remove the panel in front of the rear wheel, and disconnect the battery at the terminals?

Looks like the two bolts to me as well.

The disconnect behind the seat is good. You just done want anything to arc and screw up any relays. I just learned today that if you touch any positive cable to carbon fiber it will arc. I would have never guessed.

A friend of mine just had this doneon his car.

It's a real b-tch to get at.

Best bet is to remove the rear cover/wing over the cats to get better access.
If you have any fender covers, use them. You'll be doing a lot of leaning over the 1/4 panels.
Remove part of the right throttle body assembly and hose to get some more access.
You may have to remove the distributer cap and tuck it out of the way to get some extra clearance.
Loosen bolts.
My understanding is that the alternator will come out, but it will only come out one way and clearances are tight so you may have to play with it to get it to come out.
Also, check the bolt length of the bolt or the nut size. I remember that there was a bit of a fitment issue once the new alternator was back in the car.

Good luck. I am going to guess that is will take 3-6 hours to do the r&r.

Are you sure?
The cap is on the left (looking to the cabin from the back), and the alternator is on the right.
Just looking down into the are, it looks like it is easy to get to.
I guess I will find out.

I found about this too. I couldn't believe it. I was trying to replace the inside engine bay cover and smelled something burning, I had the piece flexed and shorted across positive and negative somehow, I saw it arcing. Very weird. carbon MEANS carbon.
