Default Diablo Oil Pump Problem !!!!!!!

Hi all
I have been reading (and learning) from the "Diablo Smoking" thread. Awesome community pitch in. That kind of help should make any Ferrari owner green with envy...))))))
My problem.......After recently dismantling my 92 Diablo engine for rebuild i noticed the oil pump bearings were very graunchy. Upon pulling the pump apart there is damage and wear marks in the housing (pictures included). I have been told this is fairly common amonst early Diablo's.
My Question......Has anybody experienced this problem before and managed to have the housing repaired. If the wear marks are polished out will this result in loss of oil pressure when reassembled. What is the main cause of the wear marks (bearing play). i have found new bearings at the local shop.
All opinions and feedback appreciated.

Matt

Matt,

I think there was an issue with oil pumps in the early Diablos. My cars history file [chassis no 12054] shows a new oil pump cover at about 18000kms.

Hope you get some words of wisdom from those who know.

Mike

I had this exact thing happen to my diablo. we succesfully rebuilt the pump. The problem is that it wears easily. You cannot buy all the parts because they are not interchangeable with the new style cover that they supply. My car would idle with only 1 bar of oil pressure when hot. You can buy one part. That part is the outer oil gear. It costs about 250 bucks. As far as the timing cover goes we machined it down inside 10 thousandths of a inch and then the outer oil pump mounting surface we had to machine the same 10 thousandths. The relief area inside the pump we had to machine down the same distance as well. Of course this offsets the oil pump by the 10 thousandths but since it is on a floating shaft there is no problem. Mine now idles at 4 bar when hot. The machinist I used will probably do yours as well if you need. He kicks ass. as far as the rest of the stuff I polished it with a scotch brite pad. You do not want to remove any material if you can help it, just the sharp bits. You need to pull the oil pump check valve, oil lines, oil filter mount, and oil cooler and clean all of these thouroughly. I spent 3 hours on my oil cooler alone. Make sure you remove the block bolts and plugs in the oil gallerys of the heads and block and clean, clean, clean. first with solvent then with a strong detergent and a pressure washer, then with a non petroleum based brake parts cleaner. Once you are satisfied spray some lubricant down the gallerys. If you miss any garbage in the motor, your oil pump will look like this again. What do the rod bearings and main bearings look like? Make sure you check, I almost did not look at mine and they were completely trashed. My car ran fine, just had low oil pressure.

Default oil pump

thanks dave,
it does need rod and main bearings (they are 50/50, but why the engine is out!!!). what did they run you???
i am just curious if it is important to machine out the wear scratches. is this going to degrade the pumps performance if it is re-installed with pump bearings.

User Controls>Edit Options>(scroll down).

So many people have already changed their options that I don't want more confusion by changing the whole board.

standard size bearings are not too expensive. I had priced them from platinum and ultimate and platinum was cheaper. I think the rods came to 3 or 4 hundred bucks. I had to go oversize and the bearing set (mains and rods together-because that is only way lambo sells them oversize) was either 1200 or 1700 bucks, but I don't remember. I did not use the 10 over rod bearings and still have them if you need them, because my crank was too far worn down. I had to have some alfa romeo bearings cut down by a machinist (width wise) to use on my rod journals. Make sure you measure the crank and see if it is out of spec. If it is you will need to machine it and have it nitride coated. marine crank out in california can do this, and jim deen machine in florida can do this. As far as the oil pump goes it will probably be ok, but maybe have a slightly low pressure at idle. As far as all the things I did in my engine, fixing the pump was one of the cheaper things I did. I would not cheap out. Obviously a new pump with all associated parts is about 4300 bucks. If Chad has a timing cover (i think retail is like 1500 dollars) that will work with the old pump that is a good deal I would do that. Just make sure it is compatible with the old stuff. What do the camshaft bearing journals look like? Also measure your piston ring end gap. Mine was huge, which indicates the rings were worn out. I had a custom set of rings made by total seal out of phoenix. They were about 400 bucks as opposed to lambos 1200 bucks, and are of way better quality. Lambos rings are cast iron and wear easily.
