That sounds a little early, my 98' comes on at 1/4. But you will notice that the gauge will fall with greater precipitance after 1/2 empty, so you'll have to keep a tight watch on it anyway..

Hi Frank, the proper etiquette is to just ask away and we'll answer every question we can.
![]() Agree the light shouldn't come on until at least a 1/4 or below. If the car is very low mileage somtimes the float gets sticky (and rusty from moisture condesation inside the tanks) and runnining with a half tank for a while, which lets the gas slosh around, will free up the float and correct itself. |

Thanks guys. I will admit, I thought it was odd that the car was delivered with a full tank. And it did drop from full to half in about 40 miles. I'll try to put a couple of gallons in each time I take it out to see if it fixes its self. But first I better fill it to get an idea of where it really is. Since I've never filled the car before, and have no idea of what's in the tank, can anyone give me an idea of how I will know it's topped off without making a mess? And I guess I'll post my other questions by starting new threads. I've noticed that the titled threads have been very helpful to me. So I would hope others would benefit the same. Thanks, Frank |

My 92 did some of the same things. She was in storage for several years before I bought her. After fill up and about 40 miles she drops to 1/2 on the gauge. However, my reserve light worked properly. Could be the float or the wire connections on top of the float and cleaning them up may resolve it. Agree if car is low mileage letting it slosh around may free up the float and sensor also. Just drive it around for a while. That worked for me. Just to make sure you don't run out of gas, you may want to set the trip odometer at fill up. Use an average of 9-12 mpg - 350 would be a good base line that the tank needs to be filled. Keep in mind the odometer is in Km not miles (10K=6 miles). So 350K is 210 miles. Early cars fill up easily, but I know a few people with later models that can only fill very slow...might be a vent issue. I also turn the pump handle upside down when filling... saw this on a Lambo video and works well for me. Stick it in normally, then spin the handle 180 degrees. Did your car come with an onwers manual? |

When I last parked it, the gauge was reading 1/2 with the fuel light on.
When I started it to go out and fill the tank this weekend, the gauge was reading 3/4 tank with no light. It took 15 gallons to fill it. I purchased the workshop manuals and the electrical system diagrams, but I can't tell exactly how it works. The diagrams are not specific enough for me to see if the light reads from the gauge, or the light and gauge read directly from the tank sending unit. If the gauge and light both read resistance from the tank sending unit, and the light comes on at about 1/4 tank, while the gauge reads 1/2, then it must be the gauge... right? But why it would read different from when it was last parked is odd. I'll take your suggestions and watch it for a while. But I'm a perfectionist, so I don't know how long I can tolerate it.
