Default countach qv ignition module whine HELP

I had an auto electricain put a new immobiliser in my 86 qv. He phoned to say he had problems with it and couldnt get the car started before he insalled the immobilieser. When I got home i though he had just badly flooded the car.
There is now a high pitched whine from the ignition module in the engine bay that I do not remeber from before although I am quite deaf and high pitched nosies can be missed by me. Teh car isnt starting although it occasionalsy splutters whereas before it started very well indeed.
Any ideas? I am hoping he hasnt fried the module somehow?
he had the fuse box down when i arrived and said there were two wires hanging loose and not connected. Again any ideas? mine is a european car int he UK.
Am scared of going to start teh car in case I am causing damage.
I dont recall if I heard the fuel pumps before? do they make any noise one can hear with the ignition on and not chrning the starter?
I know the questions seem odd, but only had the car a few weeks and before i just turned the key and the car started!
Paul

I had that same very very high pitched whine. I my situation it was actually the air pump which created the whine. We took the air pump apart and rebuilt it, the whine went away. Check to make sure the air pump is in fact working. When you turn the ignition on you should in fact hear the fuel pumps gear up however that doesn't sound like the problem to me.

hi thanks for the suggestion. In the UK we dont have air pumps connected. I put a stainless stell manifold on and deleted teh air pipes from it. the noise is definetly from the ignitioon module as had friend who has good hearing listen and auto electrican also said was from there

1. the whine is from the Magnetti marelli Box
2. you can only hear the summing of the fuel pump when the ignition whine is off

It's normal that there are some not connected wires, depends on which he meant since one wire is the signal from the key lock steering the relais in the fuse box.

Does you car run or not?

When you unplug the 6 pin connector from the box you should be able to hear the fuel pumps, perhaps he switched off these.
Both pumps are located at the bottom of the left fuel tank just in front of the rear wheel.

It's the connector below this shield with the brown rubber boot

Default Countach ignition module

Raymond
My module appears slightly different in that there are two brown connectors side by side. i took out a plug last night and held it against the block and there was only a very slight spark if you held it about 1cm from block, so i suspect there is something badly wrong and perhps the electricain has fried the module!
when i got back he had the battery on the battery charger and think he had started the car with the charger attached although he said it never read above 15amps! not sure if he is referring to the battery gauge inthe car as the charger isnt visiable from inside.
i have heard stories about the units being very sensative to being jump started etc. how accurate is this? the battery charger i use is a very good professional unit.
If the unit is fried, can they be repaired?
If not i red your posts about the MSD unit. do you make these?
how much are they?
We could try the unit on another countach to see if it fires
Any other reason the unit would emit a high whine? I also notice the car doesnt turn over as well as it did on the starter? Is it possible if the unit is fried it would draw large amounts of current?
any advice would be appreciated
Paul

Paul,

first plug always the plug wire to the distributor and hold this one to the block, distance should not be more than 3-5mm.

The high whine is normal for the modul and is good per se since that indicates the voltage transformer is working.

To the MSD unit, yes I prepare them for an immediate installation, see http://www.countach.ch/Sale.html

IanQV and some others here in the forum have a unit from me already.

Back to your setup, can you post a pictures since I cannot imagine what two connectors you mean (perhaps the magnetic pick up at the distributor?).

Default countach

hi raymond

once again many thanks for your kind and immediate help. Very much appreciated.

i will take some pics tonight and post these.

I will disconnect all wires to the module to see if noise is coming form somewhere else. Just spoke to Carlo of topgear cars in scotland who checked his QV and he says whine comes from fuel pumps and no noise or vibration from module.

Will check, but because my hearing is so poor it does casue problems in detecting where noise comes form!

Paul

Paul,

the high pith whine is the box, the fuel pumps are more a deeper summing, here the relaisbox, it's from the 25th but it's like in the QV with the plastic box in the trunk.
