I planned to install the fuel pump today and the new brake ducts, but instead I saw the water pipes...
I thought these were made of aluminium, but NO it's steel and steel rusts...

You can imagine what I was doing this evening, first sanding then treat with rust eater and tomorrow repaint them...

Don't look at the background, it's my cellar where I have a big mess at the moment

For all who have oil drops under your engine, check if it's really engine oil, we have several cars with gearbox oil leaks not engine oil!!!

It's the seal ring of the gearbox main shaft which is leaking, it will of course be replaced, this seal costs about $9, but the work to replace it...

It's piece #31 of tav12, my whole clutch bell was full of oil and dirt mud...

Ray:

What type of hose did you use for your oil return? It looks like it would hold up very well to the temperature of the oil. Plus, I like the looks of the black and red hose.

My oil hoses on the Jalpa are blue in color, and it looks like oil is actually "bleeding" through them.

It's a standard hose you can buy here at a technical stuff company, they have about 30 different sort of hoses, some for food other for chemical products. The one I use is called universal it can handle water/oil and fuel up to about 110 degrees C, my oil got 130 deg. that's no problem for this hose.
Lamborghini used silicone hoses which are good, the problem on yours could be that someone used a common water hose which is not able to handle oil, the oil will simply sweat through the hose I had this on my car too.
I used the universal hose with a SS winding in it for the hose from the oil pump to the oil radiator, with this extra strong hose it will not touch the throttle wire any longer.

@Mike, if you want I can organize this hose for you, it's no problem since I'm at one of their shops every week...

Raymond, Could you please inform me of what is involved in this. I am curently doing a major service on my 1984 Countach and have not touched the transmission.

I know the transmission is different, but I would hope the work involved in changing that particular seal does not differ that much between the 2-valve trans and the 4-valve trans.

Sincerely Vic

PS: You are doing a superb job on the rebuild and I would like to personally thank you for sharing alll the detailed pictures with us. What you are providing to us is invaluable in my opinion Thanks very much.

Raymond,

I was wondering if you had any concerns with other seals that are located inside of the oil pan and engine (rear main, differential and driveshaft seals)?
I would guess not or you guys would have replaced them at this point.

I was curious though seeing that you said that there was a good amount of oils or gear lube in the bellhousing area. I had been told that sometimes when the differential seal starts to go bad that gear lube can travel down through the drive shaft tube and end up in the bellhousing. I don't know if this is true or not but I wanted to mention it, maybe someone else can comment on this subject.

Best of Luck, Vic

I have some new pictures from today...

But first to the question of Vic, it's mostly the seal ring of the gearbox, not the differential, see the picture of the untreated clutch bell with removed seal ring.
The shaft tube to the differential is totally dry.

The oil pan and differential have no joints, there is only a silicone layer between the 2 metal surfaces, since my oil pan and differential were dry we didn't change this...

Here my tries to improve the position of the fuel filter:
1. original mount changed

2. own made mount

3. last version which will be installed tomorrow

then I had to replace the broken brake ducts, it's a disaster how they produced these ducts, I cannot understand why they didn't improve this up to the 25th!

very tight fit...

I bought a special tube which is made of 2 layer paper with aluminium between, you can form this very good to make it fit the aluminium duct which is behind the spoiler.

I used the same to replace the hose for the cabin air.
Don't look at the floor it will be cleaned out and repainted later...

Finally I repainted also the water pipes, perhaps I will have them remade in aluminium one day...
