The factory headers are made of stainless steel
but not of a good quality...(what else)

Since my engine still got hot in Italy at 34 degrees C outside I will test another radiator fan setup.
I remarked a blow back on the radiator, where the fan is the air is sucked through the rad, but in the edges warm air came back. I took this radiator fan from a Porsche 944: ![]() With the shield the air is sucked on the entire surface of the radiator. It was only a simple test, I will do some testing once my left leaking radiator is fixed but then in the car with hot engine. I will measure in/out temperature at the radiator with different fans. I will also organize the 6 blades version of the 944 fan, I should be able to find one in my friend's Porsche spare parts house, that one costed me $15 on ebay...

Hi Raymond,
Beautiful job!!! The silver heat shielding you installed will reflect the heat back into the engine compartment instead of allowing it to propagate outward into such places as the passenger compartment. Keep this in mind if the cooling problem does not go away. Once again..... beautiful job!!!! Dr. Don |

Don,
the water gets hot, this has nothing to do with the insulation of the engine bay, either the thermostat is the problem or the radiator itself. Also are the radiator fans not optimal, there shouldn't be a flow back in the edges, therfore I try now different radiator fans with air shields. The one of the Porsche 944 I installed seems to be effective but this needs to be tested in the car to be sure.

Since I have to fix the leaking left radiator we will also change the thermostat.
Anyway the back flow to the front of the radiator is bad, if I can cure that with this simple and cheap fan with the mask why not... BTW: you didn't drive that fast as me and turned the engine to 7500 rpm almost the whole time ![]()

Hi Raymond,
You are correct to check the simple stuff such as the thermostat and fan first but additional heat in the engine compartment will cause the water temperature to rise. Engines usually run cooler water temperature with no hood since the heat coming off the engine can readily escape. Hope the simple things rectify the problem. Nice job!! Dr. Don |

Don, the insulating of the firewall does not reflect that much heat to be of evidence, more important is the wrapping of the headers, the heat cannot escape that good which might heat up the engine additionally.
It's much better to coat them than to wrap since with coating the headers themselves are insulated whereas the wrapping prevents the heat from escaping into the engine bay. Also you can only wrap SS headers, normal metal will fall to pieces within some years. When I had known that there is a possibility to have my headers coated just 60 Kilometers away from my home... well can imagine how they would look like today ![]()

Hi Raymond,
Another question. I noticed the valves when in the head had a flat surface to them but when on the bench there was a depression and axial hole. Are these sodium filled? Also I see you are using a mercury manometer to synch the carbs. Is this better than a unisys which sits on top of each carb? I have had loading problems with the unit that sits on the carbs. One more thing. The cam problem you had occurs in the 911 as well. Hopefully the exhaust valves can not strike the pistons as in the 911. Keep those beautiful engines singing!! Dr. Don |
