Uh...guys. Not to start some sort of online arguement on the issue, but anyone living in a country with a tax rate nearing 50% cannot claim that anything from the government is 'free'...! I would rather pay 22% tax here in the USA, and then pay a bit of the other 38% I saved on a decent medical insurance plan than have the government take the money from me and 'give' me 'free' medical care (...and in Canada, that care is very questionable...).

I think we're getting a little bit too offtopic right now...

Terry has our best wishes for his wife and Eric those for Tahiti's gearbox, though a gearbox is a simple thing to bring back to normality.

I agree, Eric have the gearbox completely checked out, does not take too much time whilst it is out. 2nd Gear syncro is always weak check that out at least

Bad news : bearings, synchros and forks have to be changed

Good news : All parts are available

Bad news : If I come across the SOBs who owned and maintained this car for the past 20 years, I'll have their liver with a nice Chianti for breakfast

Good news : There is about nothing left which has not been dismantled and checked/adjusted/replaced/etc on the mechanical side, and I soon with have the best Countach of all !

Hi Fahad,

I bought the car in October 2005 and I drove for at least 4 hours before my mechanic freaked out and asked me to stop ! The car has been in the garage since January 2006. Being away from Europe most of the time, there is nothing much I can do to keep the pressure on the subcontractors guys, but Marcel the Mechanic does his best. I trust him 100%, and, again, even if it takes time, I'd rather know the car in his hands for a perfect restoration than sitting in a parking lot after having a quick fix by some jerck like the ones who took care of the car before I bought it.

We found a lot a things very wrong on this car, and even if Raymond do not agree, I'm sure something bad has been hidden from me by the previous owner. The instruments show 49k+ kms, but as "bad luck", the odo had failed "just the week before I went to buy her"..so the owner said. I believe it must be around 60k Kms, but after completely rebuilding the engine and the gearbox, that doesn't matter anymore really.

I just sent a message to the garage asking them to check more things such as the hydraulic circuits, the wheels bearings and stuff, and the steering system, rack and pinions...just in case. If the car is back to a perfect mechanical condition, I just want to make sure it is safe and well balanced. I don't want to "eat" a set of tyre every 5k Kms, or find out at the first emergency "limit" braking that the calipers fall apart or the steering comes loose...if you see what I mean.

Anyway, it sure will be in a perfect mechanical condition once it is out of Marcel's garage, and a couple of months in the leather shop to renew the upholstery will make it very....desirable but unfortunately, still not for sale ...not until I reach the 50k kms behind the wheels anyway

I agree with you in the sense that there were problems you're not able to see immediately, about the odo I don't know.
I just can say that the previous owner didn't drive the car very much but for sure had no senses for mechanical issues.

Remember there is another black LP5000s suffering the same problem with the casting sand in the engine. This is not the fault of the former owners, the gearbox is for sure and also the incapable mechanic who replaced the clutch and did other things wrong (working over 20 years on lambo...)

As long as the oil pressure is OK you don't realize the problem with the sand, on Tahiti it was found only because the oil pressure valve was blocked causing a pressure of more than 10 bars which finally broke the head gasket seal ring letting oil into water.
If this didn't happen the damage inside the engine would have been even worse...

As mentioned, the gearbox is another theme, obviously the syncros were turned (you can use them on both sides) and then some screws and nuts were not fixed correctly.
I'm eased I'm no more bringing my cars to that mechanic and found Marcel instead 2 years ago...

Why cry Eric, she will be ready and perfect for you when you get back. My complete re build cost about €4500 and that was with a lot of new parts.
