Default Tracking a G

Yes, it's that time again - bored at work....

So, today's question is:

- I have a decade or so of tracking cars under my belt, and experience says that there's certain things about a car which only get found out on track. I have heard the Gallardo brakes fade quite quickly but this may be fixed with a change of pad compound, how reliable is this info? and is there anything else which could be susceptible to track use?

Also, how wallowy is a G on track? Do the tyres give up first before the suspension?

I did not find that to be the case at all; I've driven my '06 G at Sebring, including a day on the short course which is a brake nightmare, and didn't have any issues. This was on a G spyder with about 2000 miles on it from new at the time, stock TYP 200 fluid and pads. I touched ABS throughout the day so I know I was mashing it. Admittedly, I was babying it through some of the concrete-lined corners as I wasn't really wanting to take it home in different condition than I brought it, but it handled well. Not on par with my Radical by any means but for a street car on Conti Sport 2 street tires, it did admirably. Problem I have now is I probably did about 2000 miles worth of wear on the front left tire since Sebring is a lot of hard right handers and with asymettrical tires, all four will have to go early.

This was in December in Florida so ambient track temp was not over 90, car ran warm but well shy of overheat. The tires would vary by about 3 psi from cold to end of session and I tended to do about 20 to 25 minute sessions. The wheels were coated in brake dust but I still have gobs of pad left. And... mileage averaged about 4. The car was really rock solid, only things I was concerned with going in was fade and stories of ABS pumps dying when street cars are pushed into ABS too much in too short a period of time; I was activating it a lot more at the beginning but started to get the feel for taking it to just before activation after the first day so I didn't punish the pump too much.

I should add, if you're used to driving a nimbler car, take your time with the Lambo, don't want to wreck it. If I went out and tried to drive the G like I drive my Radical (Sherman tank vs street bike) it would not be pretty, but for a car of its weight, the G performed quite well.

I drive the facelift-predecessor of the car behind you in the pic, so yes, quite nimble.

4mpg? positively frugal (I get 50mpg from the Elise)

Now now, we're talking track mpg, the Elise can't get better than 15mpg on track can it?

15? i've never seen anything that low! Remember, mine has the Rover K-series, not the 'yota engine.

On track I reckon 20 is probably the lowest.

Wish the Radical got that kind of mileage, even at 1500 cc it averages 5 mpg so I end up spending $175 on race gas for a weekend.

$175 on race fuel is nothing compared to the engine rebuilds and chain issues you're soon to get then

Is it a Clubsport? Supersport? SR3?...
