Default Timing chain adjusting procedures

I know this is easy, but I am a little confused on the procedure for the Jalpa. In the owners manual a brief description on the adjusting the timing chains is given. From the manual, you would find tdc on #1 and adjust that bank, and then turn the crankshaft 1/4 turn clock wise so that the #1 was 90 degrees after tdc, then adjusting that bank ( is this when cyl #5 is at tdc ?)

It really helps to know what engine you are working with.

Check with Raymond on this, he is very good on the Jalpa.

If you cannot check with him, this is what I would do. With cam covers off, see how much slack you have in each chain for each bank. From what you are saying they adjust seperately. You are looking for maybe a 1/8th deflection of the chain, on an old chain. Once you know the slack, just adjust the tensioner accordingly. After that rotate the engine by hand and check again.

I don't know the firing order by heart but when it's discribed like this it must be correct... there are two tensioners one for each bank which need to be adjusted separately.

It's adjusting the right bank (close to the fire wall) that I am curious about. Do you just turn the crank shaft a 1/4 (90 degrees) and then adjust it?

That is correct. Just as it says. TDC to then turn out the bolt and retighten on the left bank and turn the crank shaft a quarter of a turn and turn out the bolt and retighten on the right bank. It is easier to turn the crank shaft if the spark plugs are removed so there is no compression. Hope this helps.

Be careful not to over tighten the tensioner. I can't tell you what's enough but I can tell you that someone had adjusted mine to tight and damaged a cam journal. The fix is to build the journal back up and remachine it. At least it didn't damage the cam!
