Thanks for all the responses

Mike,

Unfortunately, I gave someone who had claimed to weld such metal many times prior and could easily fix the broken ear back on to its proper location. It turns out he ended-up having "too much heat applied" and it completely melted the broken ear into a puddle of solder.
Hence, I'm in need of a new base. I DO like your idea though and I'm sure it will work very well.

I'll practice a little more patience and see if something comes up on eBay prior to spending several hundred dollars on a mirror.

BTW, Is GT Car Parts still in operation? Just curious.

Thanks,
Gianni

As far as I know, GT Car Parts are still in business. I know they are very busy, and sometimes you have to keep trying.....

Default My first post here

I have been “hovering in the background” for awhile in this forum, but with a 1972 Espada (owned since 1986) and a 1985 Jalpa (owned since 1994 and now converted to a twin turbo) I am not new to Lambos.
My web-site: http://home.earthlink.net/~laust/
My Jalpa TT conversion (on Fred Paroutaud’s web-site): http://www.400gt.com/vlg/jalpa_docs/laust_index.htm

As to the Jalpa mirrors I a few months ago had exactly the same breakage problem and fortunately was able to fix it with some aluminum alloy brazing that appears to melt at about 90% of the cast aluminum’s melting point, meaning that I also saw the “eminent collapse” of the first broken ear, but managed to save it and learned my lesson for the second broken mirror. In the process I added some material so the fix should be stronger than the original.

With some effort the mirrors are supposed to swing back and forth and I discovered that mine had frozen of old age (corrosion and lack of lubrication). Taking the spring mechanism apart and greasing the parts was all it took make it function as intended. This should significantly lower the risk of having it broken in the future.

Triestino, I may be able to machine a new eye and braze it on the base that you have if still is usable.

Laust

Smile Still Looking for Jalpa Mirror Base

Hello All,

I have been patiently looking for the driver's side rear view mirror base for over a year now (or so it seems) with no luck. I tried ReOriginals to see if they had any replica's left and was told they are 'out of stock'.

Does anyone out there have a base they can part with or know of where I might find one. Unfortunately, the 'ear' part was partly melted when someone attempted to resolder/weld it back on. I will include a picture shortly to give you an idea.

ANY help would surely be appreciated....as I really miss driving my Jalpa

Grazie Mille !!!
Gianni
