Default Jalpa Transmission Fluid?

What type weight and brand should one put in your Jalpa transmission and at what intervals should it be changed.
Side note..I was told to use Castrol GTX 20-50 for engine oil. Is that what everyone is using? I found locally the Baldwin Oil filters BT292 for only $4.25 each!! Are those the best to use?

Aehm, transmission and engine are completely different...

You can use every semi or full synthetic 10W40/50 engine oil, doesn't matter, every today oil is better than the Agip Sint 10W50 when the car was new.
Some recommend partly synthetic oil because it shall be better for the sealings (said to cause less oil leaks).
Agip Sint 2000 10W40 of today is not bad and can be used as well.

Thanks Raymond. So what should I use in the transmission?

The manual recommends AGIP Rotra MP/S 80W/90. However, since AGIP oil's are so difficult to find in the USA, I posed that question to the folks at Redline.

They recommended their: 75w90NS oil.

Redline makes good stuff, you wouldn't go wrong with Mike's suggestion.

As Lambo recommends SAE 80W 90, you could also go to your local parts store and purchase Mobil 1 (SAE 80W 90).

Both the Redline product and Mobil 1 contain PTFE variants that bond at a microscopic level which maintains lubrication after long periods of non-use.

I change my transmission oil, once a year. When you cange your oil, just make sure that you're careful to prevent dirt/contaminants from getting in as this defeats the purpose! You don't have to be super anal, but exercising some due care is always a good practice. Hope this helps.

Default Emery's Question Regarding Jalpa Engine Oil

As far as engine oil, the owner's manual recommends SAE 20W-50.

Standard Castrol 20W-50 is a fine choice, but I would highly recommend paying the extra money and going with a synthetic. Synthetics would have been used by Lambo if they had been available in the day and/or not cost prohibitive.

If you want to stick with AGIP, try Agip Synthetic PC 20W-50.

Our local Lamborghini dealer recommends using either Mobil 1 (15W-50) or Castrol Syntech (5W-50).

At any rate, Synthetic oils are derived in the laboratory. They are pure, usually nearly clear. I would describe mineral based motor oils as a distilled, concentrated product. In raw form they contain impurities that need to be removed.

Synthetic oils contain PTFE and/or similar chemical variants, these additives help to reduce wear. Due to a reduction of internal friction, most engines will run slightly cooler (although claims are usually greatly exaggerated in oil adverts). This is advantageous as wear increases as temperature increases (all other things being constant). In addition, synthetic oils do not thicken as much on cooling and maintain better fluidity as the temperature drops.

The main advantage that synthetics have over mineral based oils are their ability to lubricate at startup. It is in the startup viscosity characteristics that really separate these oils.

Hope this helps.

Lamborghini as italian complany suggested Agip Sint 2000 of 1985 which was 20W50, today's Agip Sint 2000 is 10W40 and still semisynthetic.

With full synthetic oil many owners discovered oil leaks they didn't have before, the whole additive stuff is the same, doesn't matter if it's semi or fully synthetic.

Mobil 1 15W50 is a very good oil I used in my Porsche 944 Turbo Cup race car, unfortunately we don't get this version in europe, here you get only 5W50 which is too thin for the old engines.

I also agree with Raymondo that modern oil is better than the Agip mineral oil that was available when the car was new. Changing your oil is "cheap maintainance" and if you want to use a std mineral and change it often, you will be just fine.

As for partially synthetics, I have also heard that they may be better for the sealings, but I have never actually seen an example where a change from min to synth made any differnce difference to the car.

Finally, do not listen to any "quacks" that state that your oil pump needs a mineral oil to maintain pressure... this is pure nonsense! The SAE ratings on the oil dictate the temp/opp/viscocisty, period.

Agip was partially sythetic in 1985 and is still ( I'M IN CONTACT WITH AGIP TECHNICIANS), I don't see any disadvantage in using this oil, I used it for many years in my Jalpa.

In 2003 when I replaced the engine mounts I used Motorex 10W50 fully sinthetic, no change in consumption or leaking was detectable. But it seamed to me that the oil temperature was a little higher than with the Agip.

Ramondo, I don't have any problem using Mobil1 15W-50 and currently use it in my Porsche 944 (daily commuter car).
