Interesting info, thanks!!!

Did you try asking Raymond? I'm betting they are ATE calipers that cross to more common Euro cars as well ... The Urraco is supposed to cross to the BMW 2002 tii, but I haven't tried to source a BMW unit and make a thorough comparison ...

Best regards,

Bryan

Brake Facts for the Jalpa/Urraco

Front Calipers cross over to BMW 630i BMW or Early 5's. Same applies for pads

Rear Calipers are Ferrari 512/400i Rear Calipers. I can't find anything else.

I have purchased the BMW calipers from a local parts store and they were a perfect match for my Urraco. I have rebuilt the rear calipers on my Jalpa with the Ferrari kits exact match.

We need a cross ref thread.

Thansk for the details Joe!!

Do you have a year and model on that early 5 BMW?

A cross reference thread is a great idea - or a Wiki page, but the latter takes more effort to maintain. Perhaps when someone finds a cross that works for the V8s they could repost it to a cross reference thread? Would a 'sub-forum' make searching easier? V8 - cross references ...

Thanks for the caliper info!!!

Speaking of crosses, what did you end up doing for brake resevoirs for the VW bug brake master? I've looked at that master as well and it seems a great match ...

Regards,

Bryan

Hi Joe!!

Think I'm going to get serious about a caliper rebuild now that winter is coming on and I (hopefully) have the time. For the cross for the front calipers, I assume you mean this BMW 6 series car:

BMW E24 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That would seem to make the following years/models good possibilities:

630CSi (MY 1977 through 1978½)
633CSi (MY 1978½ through 1984)

As far as 5 series cars out at the same time:

BMW 5 Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Are we talking the E12:

1979 M535i - 3.5 L I6, 218 hp (163 kW) US
1975-1978 530i - 3.0 L I6, 176 hp (131 kW)
1979-1981 528i - 2.8 L I6, 169 hp (126 kW)

Don't forget, most of us don't have the run of a big NAPA warehouse like you were savvy enough to arrange. My experience looking for crosses is, if you walk into a NAPA, Advance, AutoZone (you name it or search online) they will ask you for make, model, year and engine and typically not have it in stock and be reluctant to pull in a broad range so you can look at the parts and see what matches ... :-)

Can you tell us what model and year BMW you pulled for front calipers please? As far as 400i goes, it looks like it was made between 79 and 85 and the 512i BB would be a good overlap from 81 - 84. Correct?

What's the best source (price and quality) you found for the front calipers and the caliper rebuild kits?

Thanks!!!!

Joe,

a VERY quick search on Advance Auto's website turned up this:

While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

Doesn't look like it matches my fronts (shape and number of bleed screws) ...

I had always heard BMW 2002tii

This looks a bit closer:

While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

And seems to cross to the 633 ... hmmm ...

Not that I am seriously proposing these remanufactured calipers ... just trying to hone in on a good fit that looks original ...

What did you buy - have a link?

Thanks!!!

was pretty sure bmw 2002 tii (for urraco) rears but with extra spacer plate between the 2 halves of the caliper - keep the spacer from your old units & swap it over if the shells are the same - try Jaymic Ltd - Suppliers of Autogas Equipment and Classic BMW Specialists in the uk - just a look around the website should tell you the acuracy or otherwise of the above.

Michael, Mark,

thanks for the info!!

Mark, the pics of the 2002 calipers at JAYMAC sure look familiar :-)

Jaymic Ltd - Suppliers of Autogas Equipment and Classic BMW Specialists

I've found caliper rebuild kits for under $15 USD per caliper (not including shipping):

BMW 2002TII Brake Caliper Repair Kit

This will be part of the winter set of projects for me, so it's not urgent. However, it would be great to run down what to use and have the parts in hand now so I can spend quality time in the (thankfully heated) garage later :-)

Michael, can you please ask Joe what he found wrong w/ the 2002 front calipers? Thanks!!

Mark, the pads front vs. rear are different order numbers from all the suppliers. That's part of what is making us think the rears calipers differ from the fronts. I haven't pulled pads (or calipers) to compare them yet (busy at work as well). Is it only a thickness difference? Rear pads thinner (to match life of fronts) hence need for spacer? At the production values we're talking about, I'm surprised Lambo would bother to spec a different pad ...

Thanks for the help and best regards to you both!!

when you do pull the pads out photocopy them or scan them together with a steel rule and email it to jaymic with maximum thickness indicated - they are helpfullness personified and should resolve question for you/us - i sit here 20 feet away from a 2002 and a urraco but wasnt aiming to take the wheels off either with my work schedule as it is at the moment if you can forgive me.

bax,

.... and the spacer is because of the differing thickness of the lambo discs vs the bmw discs as far as i know - 2002 (even) tii model is drums on the rear so calipers must be fronts all round if the parts bin was raided from Bavaria.

4 pot calipers on tii are 40mm if that helps.
