my 85 jalpa 12250 had regular fog lights. the owners manual i had with the car showed the switch. it think it was on the right side of the instrument panel. ( 12250 is USA spec. )

if i can find my notes this weekend i will post them. i traced all the front harness and mapped it wire by wire with a multimeter, as my former car like to eat alternators every time the cooling fans and headlights were on at the same time for any long period.

Default the law of unintended (italian) consequences

well, thanks to all who tried to help...i have to laugh at myself...the bottom line is i was chasing a "non-problem"....seems that i too have non functional light buttons that are ,by design,pointless...after swapping out relays and jumping fuses i came to the same conclusion as some of you had previously mentioned...the "foglights" are not foglights..they work fine when you pull the stalk toward you confirming that they were never broken in the first place....they are solely intended as passing lights...i found it funny that the buttons on the dash serve no purpose...HOWEVER, in messing around with all this i created a different weird problem....i lost my high beams..when the stalk is pulled toward you they come on but when pushed away from you nothing happens..no blue indicator light either...they worked fine before..even weirder is i can close the headlamps, push the lever away from me, and i get the blue light on the dash indicating the high beams are on...so before i give up on ever having high beams, any ideas on this? and yes, i went back and rechecked the fuses in case i shorted something...all were good...by the way,no complaints..owned many italian cars..this is part of the charm :-)

Did you make sure the conectors stayed in place if you took the relays off and on? If you take a relay out and put it back, the connectors in the pannel often fall out of place.

I know of at least one owner who sorted out light issues by reconnecting dropped connections.

This is a much talked about issue. Let me know if you have questions on what to do.

thanks ohlgren...i will take a look at that this weekend..i see the panel is held on by just a few screws so hopefully not a big deal to have a look...i guess that means the high beams are relay controlled and not fuse controlled? i do remember reading in the search feature about connectors being a problem...thanks!

Lynn, I believe the lights on the dash should work, I have managed to get all mine working (3 of them were not initally two fog & 1 other), I also believe that the two buttons on the centre console should also turn on and off the front and rear "fog lights". It is well worth while printing out the 2 electrical digrams from Raymonds site, the second smaller diagram actually gives you electric plug wiring details(Get these blown up make tracing much easier). I would attempt the following undo the 4 screws that hold the dash in place, you may have to release the trip meter reset on the lower dash, from memory undo the speedo cable, there are two large electrical plugs that you can't mix up disconnect these the dash panel should now come out. Check all the globes and cable connections on the back of the dash panel they are cheap as chips to buy, Once the dash panel is out of the way it will reveal another screw that holds the centre console button panel in, there is also another allen key on the passenger side it should be a little more obvious but it is in the recessed grove. the panel should now pull forward and reveal the backs to all the buttons. Use the two diagrams to help trace the wiring, look for the wire colors on the digram and match them up with the back of the relays, switches and globes or what ever you are trying to get going, it takes a while to trace things but once you get used to it isn't too hard, check where you should and shouldn't have power, use a multimeter to confirm the switches are functioning properly and that you have power where you should, you will probably see all the fibre optic lighting here as well it is quit a simple system they use one globe providing the back light to all the switches, this was all disconnected on my car but it is what provides the back lighting to all the switches. It is a process of elimination check both side of the plug as the plugs can be faulty ie if you have power an the left side of the plu make sure you have the power on the right side coming out I even replaced some switches with new ones assuming that the connect woyld be good but after many hours of searching I evetually found theat the plug to switch connector wasn't contacting properly.
