Default jalpa foglights

hi...my front foglights have never worked on the car since i bought though the mechanic who did the PPI said they did upon original inspection....does anyone know whether the foglights single failure point is a fuse or a relay? i read the manual and looked at the schematic online (thanks to raymonds awesome site)..it seems the fuses are labeled and none are for the foglights..the relays are just titled "relays" without specifics as to which one controls what...i searched the forum and the relay panel seems to be a problem source as well since the "pins" have been known to push out of the back as you insert the relay...i can check this as well if i knew which relay location to start looking for..thanks for the input and the community..

I think those lights are just there for the looks.... I have yet to investigate mine, they do not work as well. It is more than likely a bad ground. There has been discussion on them in the past. I will see what I can dig up.

The Jalpa has no foglights, the ones in the front spoiler are the high beams.

High Guys, I try to only chime in when I know what I am talking about so it it goes.

In Europe and European Jalpas the "fog Lights" are used as high beams and or passing lights.

In the US i.e. North American Jalpa at least the three I have owned they are used as traddtional fog logs. As per factory spec they only come on when in the low beam headlight position. When you turn your high beams on they will turn off.

However, with that being said I had my mechanic rewire my lights so they can remain on as long as the parking lights are on... therefore fog lights are on in parking lights, low and high beam settings.

This can be done one of two ways. You can run a direct wir from the back of your low high beam main light to the input wire of the fog light... this is the getto way but it works. Or you can rewire the fog light fuse and path. This can be done one of two ways. either with a new wire path through your running lights relax, throught he high / low beam relax or rewiring the entire switch.

I can wirte my mechanic and see if he remembers what he did. Mine are not getto wired, but I am not sure what path he went.

I also had him do the same on my rear "fog" lights so I can have them on or off at any light setting as long as the parking lights are on. i.e. the rear fender/bumper lights are on in both the low and high beam settings.

Does this help.

detour, thanks for the fast response...i agree this is not a critical issue but i like having them so i don't hit any wild boars on the way back from orlando ...long story :-(
if i could just track down the correct relay/fuse this would be an obvious start...roving,that is an interesting factoid on US vs euro spec cars...if i strike out on the obvious,i can always take your solution to my mechanic as a optional solution...anyone else ever trace the fuse/relay for the front fog lights? thanks everyone

Lynn,
As Raymond said they normally orperate when you operate the high beam lever without the head lights on that is a good test, if you are getting nothing then you need to check the wiring and find out where you are not getting any power, as in the diagram on raymonds site that shows the relays, start with relay 4 make sure you have someone holding the high beam lever(indicator arm) held forward as if you are flashing someone then make sure that you have power on the trigger wire of the relay I think this is also mention onthat same page, you may want to check that you have the correct relays in as well there are two different types of relays used as mentioned on the same page at raymonds site you should have 6 relays of type 12v30A and one relay of type 12v 20/30A note it only as suttle difference but very important I had two of the second type on my car and took a while to work it out. NOTE the fog light should be of type 12v30A.
PS front fog light relay is the top right hand relay if you are not aware, there is a good diagram on the common problems page of Raymonds site

Raymond is correct.
These lights act as high beams and BTW both of mine work and I have a replacement bulb in my tool kit.

We had this discussion on “another site” and I think the conclusion was that it is impossible to establish any firm connection between factory wiring scheme and country.

I had long given up on my projector lights, when they didn’t work pushing the right buttons on the instrument pod, until Raymond pointed out that his were passing light only (turns on when pulling the light stalk toward you). It turned out, so were mine (US spec car).

I does bother me a little to have non-functional instrument buttons and a contradictory manual, so maybe some day ...
