Check your belt for wear. There is one belt that is run off the cam. This belt also runs the water pump with runs the distributor. If the belt breaks it is an exciting series of events. (speak from experience). The is another belt on the passenger side for the air. Best bet is to ckeck the belt for wear. If the belt appears to be fine you can spray it with a little silicon spray to stop the squeak.

Perhaps it's the belt of the smog pump?

On further investigation, I found the plastic surround that keeps the cogged belt from exploding in the engine compartment when it gives way is somewhat warped and is rubbing against the alternator spinning thingy...and also wore a hole through the plastic where the cogged wheel is. Lucky I caught this...it could eventually lead to my cogged belt to skip or break. I was thinking of removing it and securing all the hoses and wires out of the way of the cogged belt. is that a bad Idea? Where can I get another black plastic cover? I could always just cut away the bent part that's rubbbing and retain some of the protection from that cover. Heat it and bend it?

that plastic cover is no more available, perhaps you can try GT parts if they have NOS (New old Stock).

Wasn't someone recently parting out a Jalpa? I know it was discussed recently on the boards. Anyone remember who was doing it?

Eurospares is outrageous with their prices IMO. It is best to have it but mine does not have the cover. So you can just remove it. But as you said you have to make sure that everything is out of the way. I might be able to have a new one made but I would need the original as a template.
