Default Are Jalpa A/C Compressors Expensive?

Or can you just use one from Napa?

Lamborghini used Sanden AC compressors, not expensive, just buy a new one at NAPA.

Raymond,

does that hold for Urracos as well? I don't see a make and number on mine ... Would it be a cost effective alternative to consider when converting to a modern refrigerant?

Thanks!! What's the Countach (and the house) news? :-)

Bryan, if you old compressor is working well, to convert to 134(WHICH I WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER DOING), all you have to do is change the oil, flush the system, and install a new the rec/dryer. If you are doing that I would also change all the hoses, as the old hose most likely needs changing anyway.

Hi Chad!!

Thanks - somehow I missed your reply until today, sorry!!

Maybe we should start a new thread for R134 conversions ... :-)

Anyway, I've heard quite a few different opinions about being able to flush the old system well, how seals hold up w/ the new refrigerant etc. Bottom line not too positive although I know a lot of folks have done it ... Not to the point where I need A/C yet (this summer), but was gathering info for what was involved ... Hadn't heard mention of a new dryer ...

Why not convert? I've actually had trouble finding folks who deal w/ the old refrigerant believe it or not ... Surprised me!! Maybe I haven't looked hard enough yet.

Thanks!!

Bryan, how many cans of 12 would you like?
Converting your car to 134, and the a/c that you have will be much less than you had with 12. That is unless you plan to reman the entire a/c system in your car.

Thanks Chad!!!

I'll take you up on the R-12, but not until Spring. A few other things to do on the car first - working on brake components now, then valve adjust, tune and some minor electrics :-)

I agree with Chad. Converting over can be tricky and will require charging the system more often. Most of the problems with R-134 are "leak-based" due to it's smaller molecular composition. In addition, R-134 conversions tend to be less efficient than R-12, especially in stop and go traffic. It can be done however.

The main reason that R-12 is difficult to find is relates back to the EPA's 1995 ban on its production.

But hey, I am quite sure that Raymond will give another extremely thought provoking response and say "just use Napa"... Of course he won't supply a part number... but hey, "it's in the parts manual" !

The Jalpa uses a Sanden 508 compressor. Very common. I know the street rod folks use them all the time. Here is a place where you can get about 10 different varieties (polished and painted to just normal cast finish):

I believe that Chad sells them also.
